I have a temporary diverting ileostomy, and I want to keep it for around 6 years. Anyone know if it is possible? Is there a limit on how long you can have it diverted?

Why six years?
I had mine for about
8 years before I had my proctocolectomy...I am pretty sure you can have it as long as you want!

Nice. I had a bad CD episode in the last two years: 17 weeks in the hospital, 2 surgeries, and one surgery upcoming. Never again.

my doc said that after 10 years they like to either reverse it or make it permanent as it can give you a greater risk of getting cancer if you dont.

If you do keep it (and have your colon/rectum) make sure you have a colonoscopy every year!

I wonder why you would be prone to get cancer if you have it diverted? An odd thing is that my rectum got worse after the ileostomy???

I don't think you are more prone to getting cancer, it's just that it could very easily go undetected, since you are not having regular bm's and screenings, etc.
