Do you spray the tincture of benzoin on the entire area that the wafer covers? I just put it around my stoma with a Qtip.

Really concerned how much the hollister seal has swelled up and is restricting my stoma. Changed this morning after just three days. My stoma was completely withdrawn into my stomach. Minor leak and irritation. Put on a flat, not convex, hollister adapt seal. I don't remember the convex seal swelling up this much at the beginning.

Hi Dan, Yes, I spray the entire area that the wafer covers. It is the only thing that I found that keeps it from itching.

Received some sample convatec convex wafers yesterday afternoon. They are precut to 7/8". Put one on this morning. My stoma was so shriveled up from the convex wafer restriction that it was much smaller than 7/8 ". I am watching that there is no ulcer starting. I am pleasantly amazed at how my stoma has grown in size. Maybe the hollister convex seal is not the answer. Sure worked great at first.

7/8"
opening is too big.
open skin all around stoma after just one day. The wafer did stick really good. No leak under wafer. The pouch had Convatec velcro drain closure. Didn't like it at all. Put on hollister convex seal and usual pouch. Ordered a sample of Convatec one piece convex pouch with 3/4"
opening. Try, try again.

Guess I am giving up on the hollister convex seal. It worked so good at first. Received the convatec one piece convex pouch samples yesterday. She sent me a full sealed box of five. Planned on putting one on this morning. Did so at 4:00 AM. Didn't plan on so early but my pouch had a different plan. BLOWOUT. In the past when I tried convex wafers they did not stick. In about
two hours it would be loose except for about
1/2" around my stoma. It is now 15 hours and it feels pretty good and is still stuck on. The pouch is convatec durahesive clear, no vent, with clip closure. It's exactly what I want. As long as it stays on I will be happy.

It's only been 18 hours since I put the convatec pouch on. I was starting to feel some irritation and itch so I changed again. It came off clean with no residue left on my skin. No broken skin or redness. The seal was perfect. I see no reason for the itch. The adhesive was so strong that it took me a full five minutes just to get the wafer off.

Changed my new convatec convex pouch this morning after 5 1/2 days. Came off clean and easy. No leakage or irritation. No
open skin. The friars didn't burn when I put it on. It did not swell up and constrict my stoma like the Hollister convex seal. My stoma is usually retracted but it has been out more than usual this week.
Convatec #175777 clear one piece pouch, no vent.

Had brussels sprouts (the little cabbages) for dinner thursday. I know better but decided to have just a few. And a few more. They were so good...just a few more. That evening and night I thought I'd die. Stoma was totally gone back into my abdomen. The contractions were severe and painful. Expected a blowout, but it didn't happen. Still having contractions and pain on friday. Changed this morning. Minor leakage and irritation. Pleased not to have a blowout with the convex wafer. With my non-convex pouch I would definitely have had a blowout.

Changed today .....5 days. No leakage. Still not satisfeid with how uncomfortable the solid convex wafer is. I have been trying to make an appointment with a new surgeon to address the retracted stoma situation. Not sure if surgery is the right answer. Don't want surgery but tired of wafer restrictions. Any suggestions?

Try the Marlen Ultramax lightly convex 1-piece. Much more flexible. They will send a sample if you call them.

Not sure if anyone is still checking this old thread...but I came across it looking for input on the hollister convex rings and ended up here. My son is 4. I have read mixed stuff about
some people having pain from it pressing in too much. Now I'm nervous. Hoping some of you can give me some encouragment or maybe some ideas. We have tried nearly everything out there. His stoma is slanted and some think he might have a peristomal hernia causing a dome type shape. So we are ready to try convex. BUT he is also in a wheelchair...I'm nervous about
all the pressing in and it being painful for him. Other flat seals don't work...pastes don't work...just about
every wafer out there doesn't work. Thoughts?

I am still using the Hollister Convex 2 piece devices. Have been since the end of 2010 with great success. I should add, that I am dealing with an Urostomy.
Have never had any problems with pressure or pain with them.
about
a year ago, they must have re-designed them a bit, and made it much easier to peel off the outer paper. I use to have a hard time with that part.
On the average, I easily can get 7-10 use out of one. Though as a rule, for obvious sanitary reasons, we change out once a week. In the past 2 years, I don't think I have had more than 3-4 failures, by that, I mean having a leaker within a day or two of changing it.
I am very happy with the use and quality of the Hollister Convex products.
Hope you find something that works well for you.

Ok, thanks for the info. We have been changing anywhere from 6 hours to 24 hours for the past SEVEN MONTHS. My WOC nurse is worthless and most support I have found online. It's been hell though!!!! Right now I just put on Coloplast convex wafer but am concerned about
poop collecting in the cup portion. I think I like the idea of the Hollister barrier better but was very worried after reading about
some people's pain using them. So hard when it's your kid!

Have you read any of my posts about
Friar's balsam compound or the swabsticks? Are you in the US?

Is there
open skin around his stoma? That can cause pain. Is his stoma retracted or extended? The swabsticks I mentioned are soaked in a first aid product "compound benzoin tincture". It helps to heal
open sores and stops leaks. It stings for a few seconds when applied. It dries sticky. My change process...No soap, no powders, no seals. I clean the stoma area with only water and paper towel. Dry with hair dryer. Apply benzoin tincture. Dry with hair dryer. Apply wafer/pouch. The swabsticks are available from www.allegromedical.com search product 560209.

No there is no
open skin. His stoma is slanted. It's not flush but it definitely is much much lower on the left side than the right...and his
opening is more towards the left side. I do all your same steps minus the product you mentioned. I don't think he needs it?

You said you have been changing every 6 to 24 hours. I assumed that leakage is a problem. What is the problem?

Yes leakage. I think it's because of his "slanted" stoma. I have tried nearly every product on the market and just now trying convex. I changed this morning and it was the best it's been. But we still had product issues. Trying Cymed today to see if that helps since it's sooo flexible (he is in a wheelchair so that is an issue too). If that doesn't work we will try the hollister convex ring.
