how long after surgery do you actually feel Good?

     I am just about three months post op.  While I am very happy to be off all the meds and be able to go places without worrying about finding a bathroom, I still feel "sore" around my pelvic area and had a hematoma drained from my anus.  Sometimes I feel crampy like I used to when I had my period...waaaaay back in the day, twenty years ago.

     I had a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvic area as my doctor thought I had a build up of pus or blood but all was clear.  Maybe I have these issues because my anus is still intact?  I also was seen by my gyn doctor.  He wants me to have that transvaginal ultrasound done but was told to wait about three months because of the healing process from my surgery.

    Is this normal?

it takes a while, up to a year to recover compeltly from surgery. I sometimes feel like i have period cramps if i have gas, or right before a huge amount of output comes out.
I'm not sure about your other problems, i hope they can figure that out!
I felt sore around the incision and in that general area for months, not painful, just sore.

Well you had some complications; not unexpected; it's a big surgery. Do you feel better than you did when you had UC? If so then I would say you are on the right track. As Summerstorm said, recovery can be long but you should see gradual improvement. Your body suffered major trauma, and because you're older, it's harder to bounce back. I think your expectations might have been a tad high for this soon out of surgery. It took me a full year to recover but I did see improvement along the way.

     Okay.  I guess I am expecting too much too soon.  I love being off all those meds.  I still think my surgeon should have sewn the anus closed though but he had his reasons.  He already had to drain a hematoma I had inside the anus and hopefully this won't return.  It still is uncomfortable sitting on my bony a**..lol, so I sit on a donut which my hubby bought for me.

I also had hematoma and mucus that was hard to deal with for three months after surgery my Dr finally gave me Flagyl and it dried things up considerably. I took it for two weeks. Now he just told me only take it if I need it.

     Fish...funny you should mention Flagyl.  My doctor had me on Cipro after he drained the hematoma, but I had severe muscle cramps on the third day.   I felt so bad I could barely get out of bed.  He had me stop the Cipro immediately and switched me to sulfa and Flagyl.  My course was up last week but I started feeling pretty yukky a day or so ago.  Of course I felt ok when I saw my surgeon last Tuesday, isn't that always the way?  We went for a walk around the mall today, just to get some exercise because I have been house bound a the last few days due to the heat.  As I was walking, I felt something come out.  I know this is coming out of my vagina.  When I got home, sure enough, there was blood and mucus on the pad I always have to wear since my operation.  I started back on the Flagyl myself today.  How long do you take the Flagyl and what dose?

It took me 6 months before I felt good. Good enough to feel normal again.

So what about how long it takes to feel like a person again? lol, I'm only a few weeks post-op and I was told that once I get my staples out i'll feel a lot better, which I don't doubt (I get them out this Friday woot!) but I have a GI tube that is really uncomfortable and I was told will have to stay in for 6-8 weeks because I was really sick. I'm hoping against all hope that it was a conservative estimate and I'll get it out no longer than 6 weeks so I can be tube free for my birthday. So far all the dr.'s have been amazed at how fast I'm recovering for how ill I was so that's a good sign :-)
Ignoring the tube issue, how long would you say it took before you just felt normal, not necessarily good, and could do everyday things like bend over and stand up for more than 10 minutes?

well i could bend over when i came home, but it hurt like crazy for about two weeks
and of course i could stand up for more than 10 minutes too,but i was so worn out that i would fall asleep!
i think after about two weeks i had some energy left, i could go and make some food or take a shower or sweep part of the house, then i had to rest, lol.
You will feel so much better after the staples are out, i think its a mental thing.
