red circle around stoma that looks just like stoma

I have a loop ileostomy. Directly around it, there is a flat red circle about half a centimeter wide that looks like the same material as the stoma. Unlike the stoma it hurts quite a bit when cleaning that area, and in general can feel itchy/painful.

What is this / what should I do about this? Before, when I had an end ilestomy I had nothing like this.

Also, when I put on a pouch, should I put it around the stoma (just the part that sticks out), or around this circle?

I was going to say what Ohio just said--I second the 1/8 inch thing.

I get that when I cut my wafter hole too big and the poo gets on my skin for an extended period of time. Try putting stoma powder on it and then putting the wafer over top of that. Cover the area! It will only get worse if more poop touches it.
