i'm keen to get back on my bike after panproctocolectomy surgery in May'10 butt (!) i'm wondering whether cycling can have an adverse effect on the 'bum' wound which has now been fully healed for about 4 months. i'm thinking of starting out with a few weeks of 10 mile trips in the new year and gradually upping the distance over the year. i just don't want to undo any healing, if there is an danger of this i'll just hold off for another month or two.

funnily enough when i asked this question back in August my surgeon (who did a great job & I respect alot) said 'fine go ahead' while my wound nurse said 'NO it would be the worst thing to do' - i took the nurses advice !

I ride horses and I had to wait longer than I thought! Can you just ride around your neighborhood? Maybe start with 10 minutes and if that goes okay add another 10 minutes and so on...I find that my bottom goes a little 'numb' when I ride my bike:( I changed the style of bike seat (wider) and that works for me.

I am gonna guess you live in a warm climate!!! Have FUN:)

thanks ohio76 - yes i'll unless i hear otherwise I'll probably start with a few 10 minuters over the christmas break & see how it goes from there - i'll keep a watch out for any funnies from the saddle area .

Re the climate here - it is generally mild & damp but when out on the hills, water or bike you've got to be prepared for sun, rain & snow all possibe in the same day. ( daytime highs of -1C / 30F expected for next week) thats why i play badminton - the weather doesnt come into the equation.

well im hardly a serious cyclist or anything,but about 4 or 5 months after surgery i would ride the stationery bike at the gym and it hurt my butt so i quit for a while. But then three or four months later it was ok, and then by the time it was warm again i would ride some outside, and i didn't have any problems. But, my longest ride outside was like 2 miles. And on the stationery bike it was like 11, so im not really all that in to it!
