I have an ileaostomy and recently in December had my rectal stump removed and everything sewn up ! I work part time as a cleaner and now after 3 months my sick pay is coming to an end sad I am in the process of claiming incapacity benefit as I am in no state emotionally and physically to go back yet to my job ! I saw my surgeon last week and he says to give myself a few more months for everything inside to heal up and as I have suffered from depression for many years my emotional state as well ! but he also said that he doesnt need to see me amymore as an out patient ! how will this help my claim as dont they contact your Drs and consultants before they decide wether you can get benefit ?? pretty confused at the moment as my husban is on a medical pension and we are slowly finding the money side a problem and I feel the pressure to have to go back to work when I clearly am not ready sad any advice would be greatly appreciated x

Isn't it the GP that signs you off work, so shouldn't they be filling in the form for disability. Afterall the surgeons are only concerned with their operation and as long as that is healing as normal then they don't want to see patients again. It is then passed back to GP to monitor ongoing care and whether someone needs longer off work to recover. Otherwise how else would people who have never had surgery but are signed off sick get disability. Make an appointment to see your GP and discuss it through with them and explain, if you haven't already done so, why you do not feel ready to return to work.

Hi Craftylass, my understanding is the same as Stripeys so perhaps that is a good place to start. After surgery, I left my job of 14 years and have been working from home mostly. Now four years later, I am back out in the work force working during tax season and loving it. So I guess what I am trying to say is that it does get better; however, you do need to give yourself time to heal inside and out. I definately think it is different for everyone and only you will be able to figure out what is right for you. Good luck!

I think it depends on your relationship with your surgeon and how much you have worked with them. Due to a few complications since my surgery in November, I have seen my surgeon many, many times. He knows far more about my case than my GP (who basically knows nothing except the fact that I have had surgery) and has filled out all my paperwork relating to work. Your surgeon may be willing to help you with paperwork/notes even if you are no longer seeing him. Have you asked him about this?

Definitely take your time returning to work, especially since your job sounds pretty physical. I was actually glad to return to my job a as park naturalist since it gave me confidence and made my life feel normal again. I have a lot of desk projects to work on though, and my boss has been very supportive about me taking it easy and not doing any lifting. My coworkers have been extremely helpful too. Everyone's job situations are so different. I really hope this works out for you and that you are able to take the time you need.

I would also think the GP that you have a long relationship would be the one to assist you on this. Good Luck - hope you find a workable solution.

i think that after 3 months you should be healed physically to return to a job cleaning. I'm not saying that you are, i'm curious as to why the surgeon is letting you go if they don't think you are healed yet?
