Hi I'm looking for some ideas for keeping the bag & wafer dry while taking a shower. I find that the wafer of my Dansac Nova bag becomes hard & uncomfortable when it gets wet from showering. I want to shower every day but I want the bag to last a few days.

? any thoughts please. Cheers.

Have you tried different bags. I use convatec natura and it is a 2 piece system and the wafer has a double layer of adhesive. It is absolutely fine in the shower and even after spending 6 hours in the water at a water park on holiday. Just towel dry off and is as flexible as before. My wafers usually last 6-7 days before I need to change them.

Ask the companies to send you some samples through and try them out at home.

sure seals! well i've just put one on for the first time this morning, but so many here say it really helps keeping the wafer dry while showering, swimming etc. you can order them on line.

i just posted a new topic with a question about the sure seals.

     I use Coloplast Sensura one piece bags.  They are a cinch!  Takes only a few minutes to change and I only do it twice a week.  No skin irritation either.  I take baths, showers...nothing interferes with their wear. yeah

thanks everyone for your speedy replies, I will certainly pursue the bags suggested & the sure seals. this is only only prob I have with the Dansac ones but with doin alot of sport & hopefully getting back to work in a busy office soon, its one needing a fix.

Must admit I have used the convatec natura ones for 19 years and they are probably considered old fashioned now as they have a separate clamp and not one built in. I get very frustrated with the ones that have built in clamp, find that by the time you have folded in over you loose half the bag volume which means I have to empty much more often. So every so often I look at new bags and order samples but always come back to the same ones.

I also use the coloplast sensura and sure seals and don't have any issues with water "damage" to my wafer. I don't do this personally, but I've read somewhere around here that people use the glad press n seal around their bag and wafer in the shower. So if you don't like any different bags you might try that.

I agree with you. I do not like the velcro tail closures. I cannot get the end of the pouch clean. I use a Convatec convex with the clip closure. It's easy to clean the end and keep your hands clean. And showering every day has no effect on the adhesive.

Trouble is polishdan, most bags now have this built in clips on them. Like the sensura, love the design of the bag and the click lock mechanism of the wafer and bag but it has the built in clip. So tried one and took it off again after 6 hours as got so annoyed with it. When you have a high output like I have, using a bag that has such a reduced volume means having to empty twice as often. Defeats the object really and no way I would be able to sleep for more than 4 hours with that volume decrease even on a good night.

If I still had my ostomy, i would take a picture before a shower for you all to laugh at... It was a hell of a scene, I would tape the edges of my bag to my skin, then follow that with a square piece of saran wrap that covers the whole appliance, and tape the edges of the saran wrap to my skin to seal everything. IT WORKED! but was ridiculous.

Are you talking about the velcro closure or the separate clip? The convatec I wear has a clip separate from the pouch. I also wear a one piece. The clip does not reduce the bag volume.

Polishdan, I use a convatec that has a completely separate clip. It is the velcro ones that are attached to the bags I can't deal with. They are set so high up on the bag you have to fold it upteen times and so reduce volume.

With the separate clip, looks a bit like the ones you use on food bags/freezer bags but curved to fit body shape, I use Hollister pouch clamps, you only have to fold over once so no loss of volume. Down side is I have dropped them down the toilet once or twice when I have been emtying bag, but usually when had few too many to drink and as nerve damage in fingers from neck injury add that to alcohol equals very clumsy fingers! So always carry spare in pocket when out on the razz!

? does putting on and removing the tape every day'ish not cause damage your skin or do you use some special tape

I can see myself sealing the whole area like you describe. It would solve my prob.

chevy i did that for a while too! now i just use the sure seal and tape the bag up onitself and cover that with tape entirely I can't stand to have it showing when i shower. No idea why, i just don't like it, lol.

The only adjustment I make to my bag is I cut off the front material cover from the bag. The stuff they put on it supposedly to reduce rustle noise, which I've never had a problem with, because when it gets wet it takes ages to dry and if in a rush and don't dry properly can look like I've had an accident!

We're on the same page except that I use the convatec clip. The convatec clip is not as slippery in your hands as the hollister clip. I have never dropped one.

Polishdan, think I might have to do a trial over long weekend and see how many drinks it takes before I drop each type of clip! Good job my system processes alcohol very quickly or I'd need a huge supply of clips on a big night out.

Yes... this was an EVERY DAY thing hahah and I just used scotch tape... It's not ridiculously sticky but sealed surprisingly well... I used A LOT of tape and it truly was a ridiculous process

You will also have to factor in what alcohol you drink! This could be a long process. By the way, what do you usually drink? My favorite is blackberry brandy with cranberry/blackberry juice 50/50.

vodka with a mixer or baileys/cointreau/tia maria known as B52. Oh and cocktails, looove cocktails. Had a very pleasant and expensive May holiday weekend few years ago with huband and 2 friends and worked our way through the cocktail menu at our local pub at least a couple of times over the three days that weekend. Brilliant!

before you go drinking, take two gas-x and two immodium, then while drinking, a few hours later, take two more gas-x and two more immodium!  i can do that and have no output at all that night, unless i eat a really big meal, but eating while drinking totally defeats the purpose :D

Ooh no can't eat and drink. Have to do one or the other. Food normally wins out as it is very expensive to get me drunk as my body processes alcohol so quickly. Never tried Gas-x, don't think we have that in UK under that name so will have to look it up. Might help as taking codeine at present for hugh stoma output as immodium capsules don't have time to absorb, the melt tablets burnt my mouth and liquid gives me terrible gas. So end up having to go and empty bag just as much but instead it is all gas, not much point in the immodium.
