Tincture of Benzoin - Polish Dan

Dan I went on the website for the Friars Balsam Compound brand and couldn't find it...I have the 1-800 # I can call

Before I do - my question is this...

The Smith & Nephew Tincture of Benzoin that I already have lists the ingredients of:  Isopropyl Alcohol, Sumatra Benzoin and Water.

Is there NO alcohol in the Friars brand?

It is looking like alcohol products are or maybe what is helping to irritate my husband.

I just got some non-alcohol protective barrier wipes that maybe we might try.  He definitely is having a reaction to the adhesive part of the wafer and the dermatologist today basically said he needs either a different one altogether or one with no adhesive.

To treat the skin irritation and possibly eradicate it - she feels it will only return later.

So the quest for the "right" wafer is underway.  Too bad as he/we like the hollister new image 2 piece system.  We will try the all pectin wafer again...tried one and it didn't seem to hold well and there was a leak after a day and 1/2 so we are not very hopeful of using wafers with no adhesive at all.

Kind of discouraged.

The active ingredients in Friars are Benzoin 10g, aloe 2g, storax 8g, tolu balsam 4g in each 100 ml. Inactive ingredient is ethyl alcohol. I have the Smith & nephew spray but have not tried it. Friars works great for me and "if it ain't broke dont fix it". I will keep s&n in the wings. I believe that Friars has more healing qualities but S&N is a good skin barrier. Friars burns like iodine of long ago.

Thanks Dan. It was last night when I tried to find it.. I didn't look under first aid and there was no search box to type it into.

The Smith & Nephew also stings a bit too when applied.

We are accumulating a lot of stuff very quickly...lol. (Can always donate what is of no further use to us when we finally find what works)

I apply the Friars to the whole wafer area. It dries sticky. It comes off with the wafer and leaves no residue. I noticed that Friars and S&N have different types of alcohol. Wonder what the difference is.

you can also google Friar's balsam and it will turn up a load of websites that sell it. even amazon.com sells it. I bought mine in a smaller bottle for only $8 from a herbal pharmacy website, I don't remember it, but the brand I bought is one I was familiar with that sells herbal tinctures at tons of local stores around Cincinnati. And the stuff works wonders!!

I use the S&N spray. I spray it on, and immediately turn the hairdryer on it. This evaporates the alcohol quickly, which is what stings.

When I have broken skin, I will use Neem Creme as well. Just a tiny bit.

Also, I will use a Marlen one piece, because it is easiest on my skin. The downside to the Marlen is that it only lasts a few days. Be sure to use a belt with it.

I rotate brands now. Coloplast, Convatec and Marlen. I try to save the Marlens for when I really need them. (I am uninsured right now, and don't have many Marlens saved up.) If I rotate them, I don't seem to build up a resistance.

Call the manufactures and see what they recommend for sensitive skin, if you haven't already. Good luck.

The Friars balsam compound has more healing ingredients than the S&N spray. The S&N is a skin prep. Friars Balsam Compound is first aid and promotes healing as well as a skin prep. Friars ingredients are listed on their website.
