Hi I just was wondering you have a temp ileo but it's not hooked up to anything so is it a temp end ileo or did they staple the other half closed and tuck back in how does that work?

Hi! I'm not runs4pancakes obviously haha, but she an I are both having the three step surgery, and are between the first two steps right now, so our guts look about the same. :) Unless her surgeon does things way differently than mine, we both have temporary end ileos!

Thanks for replying so I'm trying to figure out how it differs from the loop? So they brought the end and completely attached it to the stomach as the loop is split in two? So do you have one or two holes for the stoma? Sorry if I sound a little idiotic ;-) trying to get as much specifics as possible. Thank you!

No prob, it's all rather confusing! With a loop ileo, the stoma is not formed from the end of the intestine, it's formed from a place in the middle. So the surgeon has to create a hole in the intestine wall for output to escape through. The end ileo is literally formed from the end of the small intestine, so output just comes out the end from the hole that already exists. Just one hole with the end ileo.

Ah ha I get it k cause what I'm thinking is having colon out leaving rectum so that if in the future I want to tackle the j-pouch I would be able to. My kids are to young for me to have surgery back to back and recovery from each so possibly when their are older this might be a great option for me! Thanks again! ;-)

Well...I thought about this some more last night and I realized I don't think my answer is correct. I remember them calling it an end loop ileostomy. I have two openings...the main one, and then a teeny tiny one next to the surface of the skin that really doesn't do anything. Also, for the first few days after surgery there was a rod under it that they then had to pull out. That is a loop. So, I don't know what exactly my guts look like inside right now. I am curious though, so I will ask my surgeon when I go back for follow up on 5/9.

Ok so now I don't feel so confused, because I was wondering how or why hey would make a loop ileo if there is no colon and they haven't made the pouch yet so what is the end of the small bowel doing did they staple it shut I had originally asked sue if they make an end ileo and you still have your rectum if I can later be hooked back up and she said as long as I keep my rectum.... So I wonder y they just don't make it an end ileo......

I'm wondering if it's a loop so that the length of intestine they will later use to make the pouch is already where it needs to be? Otherwise they would have to make a new ileo/stoma when they do the next surgery I would think. It is quite the mystery. I will be sure to ask when I have my appointment and report back!

Thanks for checking, the reason I'm so stuck on this is because if I understand correctly the loop ileo is pulled through higher up so your transit time is supposedly faster then an end ileo... Definitely will be asking at my appt too on the 25th.... Have you decided when you might have the next step I'm curious as to your timing I know you stated you have little ones, mine are 17mo and 4 and so I would want to wait until my youngest is much more independent :-)

I'm hoping for step 2 in October. I want to run a half marathon in mid-October and then go in after that.
