I believe I lost 3 cm of small bowel in getting my end ileo.... it was on the pathology report.

Karen, sweets, what i perfectly remember is that you had good transit time of your small bowel when you had the stoma, didn't ever need any kind of a laxative, stimulant etc and feeling great. there's NO reason the new loop/end of small bowel to create the stoma wouldn't work. these are all anxiety thoughts you're having!

as stipy said, the stoma location in relation to the small bowel depends on each individual, so that's something you'll have to find out from your surgeon only. as you know, my stoma is also a loop one and my surgoen told me it is 10 cm above the anatomosis site, so didn't lose that much of small bowel.

but actually, b/c my small bowel is so slow, my surgoen once suggested that we can go higher up in my small intestine and do the stoma 1 meter upper. well, it was long ago when he said that and i'm not sure about it. prune juice clears me out every day and im ok. i don't want to go through that experiment.

i'm sorry that you're probably feeling disappointed and all.. i hope you find peace and happiness with your decision ♥♥♥♥

Thanks everyone...

i just had a look a bit more on the web and it appears the ileum part of the small bowel  is used to create an ileo whether loop or permanent stoma - that is worrying - as it is the end part of the small bowel!!! why then does my bowel not work now??  i know i keep asking the same questions over and over but i really wish i NEVER had a reversal cause i seems my bowel is now completely screwed up now cry cry cry cry    

gosh i feel dispondent today. do you think my small bowel has taken 'umbrage' cause it has been handled too much?

Thanks Hodaya i just saw your post after just typing the one above - you make me feel so much better - yes anxiey is the understatement of the year with me..

I know i need to have faith and such that all will be well - it seems i must have some sort of pelvic floor probs then??? especialy now knowng that the join is so close to the rectum. x

i totally believe your problem is only in your pelvic floor and NOT your small intestine, Karen. i have to admit, i don't remember seeing you ever in such levels of anxiety before.. i guess this time this really affected you and i'm so sorry you're going through such a hard time.

i didn't understand why the fact that the stoma is usually made from the ileum part worries you? BTW, the ileum is about 3 meters long. but anyway, as i said, your small intestine is fine and NO, i don't think it has taken 'umbrage' cause it has been handled too much.

my sweet old friend, if this is the way you feel right now (with the anastomosis), there's no point keeping going like this. i'm VERY happy with my stoma, feel best i've felt in SO many yrs, as you know. Tracy loves life again since she got the stoma :) so many others on here love their new life, now with thier stoma. and also you... you were so happy with the stoma too. you can go back and i truly believe there's no reason why your small bowel shouldn't function as it did before the reversal - get that idea out of your head.

if it's possible, ask your surgeon if he can use sepra film on the stoma scar. i don't know if it's necessary, but see what he sais.

and pls cheer up hon!! things will work out just fine, i'm sure! ♥♥♥♥

Hodaya thank you so much you help me a lot. I was worried about the ileum part cause i thought that if i was having sm bowel probs and they use that part of the bowel for the stoma placement then what hope did i have as it appeared my whole bowel is not working now?? But you seem very knowledgeable about the bowels! Three metres long is a lot. what you say makes sense i will try to feel better about it all. i will ask about the sepra film -not sure what it is - does it keep it secure in case of hernia? i do feel rather fragile in that area now that it has been cut twice and will be the third time they go in.

i really appreicate your help hodaya you are a true friend. x

you don't have small bowel probs! and things will work just as good as they did prior to the reversal, i have NO doubt!!! the sepra film is some stuff they put on the surgical cut (where they cut the abd) to prevent developement of scar tissue. i'm not even sure you'll really need it, just thought you should mention it to your dr and see what he thinks. maybe it's not even necessary in your case. but yet, maybe it can make a lot of difference in the long run.

it is SO normal to feel fragile with all you've been through - BIG HUG!!!!

now DON'T WORRY!! go to your dr and tell him you want the stoma back. things will work out just fine and creating the stoma is a simple procedure, now that they only have to take out a loop. my stoma surgery took only 20 mins!!! keep us posted, ok? love you much!

Hey karen. When you had your loop ileo, how often were you emptying, and did you have relief from bloating that came with colonic inertia?

Hey - i was emptying: middle of night (depends on late night snacking or not), in morning after waking, after breakfast, after lunch, late afternoon, after tea then prob one or two times before bed... but i also liked a flat bag so it might be more if i was out and had a tight top on...

Yes i did get bloated but it went down very quickly and i had a flat stomach most of the time unless i ate too much or ate foods that i had probs with before i.e. fibre, fruit and raw stuff... but NEVER got discomfort or felt 'heavy' as per the usual colonic inertia symptoms

Was just wondering if you were pretty much bloat free with the ileo. Seems like if it worked while you had it, and things got bad going back to an IRA, then going back to the ileo is the best thing to do if you think it will give you a better quality of life again.

Karen, when I went to see my doctor, he said my ileum was damaged from those scar adhesions that I was born with and that he had to go a tad higher up in my small intestine than he normally does to make my stoma.

I now have to give myself b12 injections because my b12 is low.

BUT, it has not been no problem at all and I am thinking that my b12 was probably already low BEFORE my stoma surgery and that may have contributed to my overall fatigue before my surgery.

Maybe that is another reason why I feel so good. My energy levels are so much better since I got the stoma.

And as far as you having a slow intestine! I do not think that is the case. I agree with Hodaya and think that your problem lies in your rectum. It sounds to me like you have pelvic floor dysfunction.

Bypass the faulty rectum and I bet your quality of life improves dramatically.

Thanks never thought about the B12 before. I always feel tired, but i will ask my consultant about that - hope you are still going strong! I am feeling more encouraged by you guys and it helps to have this support. x
