Question about tail clip closures

I just got some Convatec samples with tail clip closures. After looking at the instructions, it seems like these wouldn't be that clean to use. Once you empty the pouch, there is stool on the inside of the tail. It seems that even if you wad up toilet paper and try to clean the inside of the tail, a little stool still remains. Once you put the clip on, this section is still exposed. The nice thing about the velcro ones is that you roll them up, so the dirty section is tucked inside. Am I understanding the tail clip wrong?

I always used a wet wipe to clean the tail before re-clipping.

Yup, that's right! YOu're not wrong.

That's one of the reasons I like the velcro best. A lot of people think velcro is gross because the output gets into the velcro a little, but usually if you clean it well, it doesn't really, and also, I don't really think stuff like that can be avoided. I'm not going to sit there and clean the tail for 15 minutes every time I empty...I'm getting on with my life! It's really not a big deal to have a slightly imperfect tail closure, especially if it's velcro. It's not getting on anything.

Thanks everyone. I had a feeling I was reading the instructions correctly. Not sure those pouches are for me. I really do love the Coloplast velcro closures and have not had problems getting stool on them. Still, I want to try some other brands as sometimes the Coloplast wafers peel up a bit on me. I just got some samples of the Convatec Autolock series and the pouches only come in the tail clip version. Right now I am trying a Convatec Sensura Natura which has an Invisiclose Velcro tail opening. Works pretty well, but hangs down a ways compared to Coloplast and brushes against my leg when I walk.

Like 80sChick, I don't like taking a lot of time to clean the tail perfectly either. It is too time consuming and then it just gets all dirty again the next time you empty:) Also, I just got back from an overnight backpacking trip (where it snowed the entire time), and I didn't want to pack tons of toilet paper into the backcountry and back out in order to get things spotless (not to mention my hands getting cold dealing with the tail). This will be even more true as I go on longer backpacking trips in the future. The Coloplast pouches were great because even if you don't clean the tail perfectly, it folds on itself so that stool doesn't get anywhere.

I use a bag with a separate tail clip (convatec natura and hollister pouch clamp) and the clamp it slightly bigger than the convatec ones. It basically looks like those clippits things you can buy to clip sandwich bags or freezer bags closed. With the hollister ones you can fold end of bag inside it so end is not exposed. Much prefer it to the velcro ones which end up having to be folded up so many times there is not much drainable bag space left so have to empty it too often.

Oh, forgot to say. Yes the clips that are supplied with the bags are useless and I just throw them away. Far too thin and fiddly.

I also disliked the tail closures, used for a few months, until the velcro ones were available for the wafer I am using. In the beginning after surgery, the tail closures were impossible to clean. One time I was wearing white pants and after cleaning, residue came out of the closure and a small amount spotted my pants. What I started to do was double roll up the closure and clamp, that way the end is tucked in and not exposed.
