So sorry to hear she isn't doing well. I'm sure everything will be okay. I know by now she hates the hospitals, mine did. That is the best place to be when she isn't doing okay. I will be thinking of you. Take care

I bet the fever is the reason for loss of appetite mad are they running any tests? could it be an abscess?

I am sure that car ride wasn't any fun but I think you did the right thing getting her back there and taking care of things sooner rather than later. My email is in my profile...please let me know if I can do anything.

Thanks all. She had an exam by her surgeon today and her j-pouch came unsutured at the rectal cuff in one place so she is having a minor surgery tomorrow to repair it. The surgeon felt that was what was causing her to feel so rough. They put her on antibiotics, nausea meds and pain meds. We'll be here 3 to 4 days post surgery but you can bet I'm not leaving here until she's doing better. So glad we got back here. Can't wait to be through with all of this. Her room mate just had take down and it is nice to see someone reaching the end of the surgical process.

Sorry to hear the complication but glad you are back there having it taken care of.

It's tough when the preferred places and surgeons one chooses are not nearby. We stayed as I said an extra 3 nights...he was released on 12/24th......not where we wanted to spend Christmas but was too paranoid to go home right away especially at our ages. The comforts of home is such a strong pull making it such a tough call to stay extra days after being released.

How is Rachael doing today? How did her surgery go. Maybe now that they found the problem she will start feelling better. Good luck. Thinking of you and Rachael

Ugh! We're still waiting for the surgery! It was supposed to be around 3pm yesterday but her surgeon had some complicated cases. At 8pm they came to us and gave us a choice of having surgery around 10pm if no emergencies arose or having it done today. They made sure to mention that the surgeon had been in the OR since 6am. We decided it was best to postpone it for today. Her surgeon felt really bad about it but I guess this fix is not such a serious thing if it can be put off. So this morning they said 9:30 for surgery and it's 11:05 now and we're still waiting...Nothing like a hospital to remind you that you're not the center of the universe! Hopefully this will happen soon.

Hope the surgeon got a good night's sleep and that the surgery goes smoothly and soon!

I just saw someone on facebook complaining that she had to wait 45 minutes in a dr's office -- really, she has no idea, that's so good.

Surgery is over - the j-pouch looked good and did not need resuturing as suspected so the surgeon thinks maybe this was a low-grade infection that's been causing the nausea and fevers. Hopefully all the antibiotics she's had coursing through her veins the past few days have knocked that out. Last night when they decided to postpone surgery they told her she could eat and allowed me to bring up some cooked sushi as that was her craving. She got some of that in but was a bit nauseous afterwards. Hoping we can get her over the hump and start getting some nutrition into her because very little has gone in in over two weeks. Doc was willing to send her home tomorrow but we aren't budging until we have her eating! I know that once we can get some food in she will feel stronger - need that appetite to kick in.

Just wanted to update that we are home now - got back last night. Rachel is feeling much better and stronger. She is still occasionally nauseated but her appetite is coming back and she is finally eating! Don't know exactly what this was all about but at least the pouch looked great. May have been a low-grade infection that she just couldn't get over. She's on Cipro for the rest of the week. So good to have her up and walking - her wound pain has diminished. We learned how to pack it over the weekend so today is our first solo venture into that. It's helped tremendously as a week ago her wound (where the drain went in) was incredibly painful. In all, we're extremely hopeful that we've gotten over the hump. It was worth a trip back to Cleveland. Sorry to be missing you, Pancake - hope you get a good report and all's well. Make sure to let us know.

I'm so glad she was well enough to go home yesterday. :) We are hanging out waiting for my appointment. I hope Rachel is continuing to get better each day.

I am so glad she is doing better. Sometimes the docs just don't know what is causing symptoms. I developed a fever and horrible nausea four weeks out from surgery. Had a CT scan and they saw a large pocket of fluid in my belly and thought it was an abscess. Drained it over a period of two days, but the fluid looked fine... no infection and definitely not an abscess. Just some random fluid. Stayed in the hospital for days just to be sure i was okay, but nothing turned up so they released me. The nausea lasted another week after that, but eventually dissipated. They thought maybe the fever was from a low grade infection too, since I was having some incision healing problems around that time as well. I sometimes wonder if the nausea was due to my Prednisone taper, as I was down to 5 mg then and tapering to 0.

Thanks for all the kind responses. Rachel's doing better - she's got an appetite back and we are feeding her lots of small meals. This last surgery knocked 10 pounds off her and she doesn't have it to spare - weighed in at 83 this morning. We'll get those pounds back on her soon - I keep telling her that this will be the last time we'll have to build her up again. UC won't be kicking her ass anymore!

Pancakes - how was your follow-up visit? Hope all went well there.

so glad she got her appetite back. get her lots of ice cream - many drs suggest that, since it is easy on the digestive system and has lots of calories. takes a while, but she'll make it i'm sure :))
