Problems with barrier ring coming off~

My daughter always has such a hard time getting the barrier ring off. She was taught to take a third of the hollister adapt ring and mold it into a snake and put it around the edge of the opening to the skin barrier floating flange. It seems her skin doesn't get as irritated under the ring as it does the flange, but she has to scrape it off with her fingernail. I suggested using the whole ring and not molding it into a snake, but she hasn't tried that yet.  Do any of you have any suggestions or have you had the same problem and how did you solve it?  Do other rings work better such as eakin seals?

do you mean when she takes it off to change it? if thats what you mean, as a general rule, if it's needing scraped off then it's being changed too soon.
i use paste and not the seals so i don't know about putting them on.

Yes, when she takes it off to do a complete change.  The part that doesn't come off is not the part the pouch connects to, but the extra "putty" like stuff.  I don't think it is because it is too soon, though, because it had been 5 days and she was getting a tiny leak under the barrier I think from where her skin folds when she bends over. 

If you use paste, how do you remove that?

It's OK to leave a bit of the gunk from the ring on, just put a new one over it. It's hard to get off. I use the Eakins and just put them on whole, not as you describe, but there's still a bit of gunk, even after 5 days. There have been some other posts about this problem, if you search under "Eakin gunk" you can find them, and see some of what other do. I just use my fingers, but don't worry if it doesn't all come off.

Just be careful that she gets it off her fingers before washing her hair! I was baffled for a moment one day when I started trying to comb my hair and there was all this sticky stuff in it.... not easy to remove.

I used to have small leaks in the fold too. I use Convatec stomahesive paste on the fold. I also use the paste instead of a ring because my skin is very sensitive.
The paste just wipes off with a saline moistened gauze pad, followed up with a little rubbing with a dry gauze pad. Be sure the paste breathes for about a minute before you put the flange on. The paste contains a little alcohol that needs to evaporate before you seal it in.

I personally think the eakin seals don't work as well as the adapt rings as far as getting them off. The eakin seals leave way more residue. Have you tried adhesive remover? Like someone else said, it doesn't really matter if you leave pieces of the seal on there.

Eakin does leave more residue but works better for some...I think it's really one or the other as to which works best for a patient. Has she tried the Eakin or just the Adapt?

Here's a thought...does she need the seal? Has she tried the wafer without it? I need a seal but did a 'test' to see:)

You could use those adhesive removers but honestly ithink they are rather troublesomeand they smell bad. If you do use them make sure all the residue is cleaned off.

Equestrian Mom - She has only tried the adapt. We have a couple of the eakin seals, though, that she could try. I don't know if she would actually need the seal, as her stoma is quite long. However, it does seem to be easier on her skin than the wafer. She already had to go to the wafer without the tape because that was causing her to get irritated.

80's Chick - Do you use the whole adapt ring or just a portion of it? They taught her to use 1/3 of it and shape it into a "snake", and then put it around the edge of the wafer. I would like her to try the whole thing as maybe that would help it come off better if it wasn't messed with so much before putting it on. Do you slide it over the stoma or cut the ring and then reconnect it?

Summerstorm - we did use the adhesive remover last time, but we were in such a rush because she was feeling faint. All I know is when I was done, I had SOMETHING sticky on my figers so bad and couldn't get it off! :) Maybe it was the skin prep wipes we tried for the first time??

I use the adapt and like them. Sounds like we learned thesame way. I put on skin prep and my skin isn't so irratated by whatever. then I make my snake and actually make it into a ring that I put around the stoma and then I heat up my wafer and put it over the little snake. My stoma isn't real long so it helps me from getting leaks too soon. I don't seem to last more than 5 days at best. Usually shorter. (3) Wish it was longer. this stuff all cost quite a bit even though I do get some discount off regular price.

My appliance mostly comes off when moisture gets under adapt ring. It was WAY worse before the ring part was added. Oh I sweat it off quite a bit working out too.

I take some solution you can buy for taking off adhesive and clean off all the sticky stuff. Then I let my skin breathe if I do it at night before bed. (Not always possible but best case scenario.) After I start from beginning. The belt works good to keep things from shifting and pulling seal from around stoma for me.

Hope you get it figured out and try everything so you can find what works best for you!

You said that your daughter's stoma is quite long. What do you mean "long". Does it hang down or stick straight out? How "long" would you say it is?
