Question for those who have an ostomy but also still have their rectum

My daughter had her ostomy surgery a little over a year ago. She always had discharge and some blood coming from her bottom whenever she went to the bathroom. Her GI said that it was totally normal. However recently it's been getting worse. We started giving her Cortifoam nightly but it really wasn't helping so we stopped after a month.

I wanted to know if any of you that still have your rectum are experiencing the same problem. Do you see blood when you go to the bathroom? and if so how often do you see it. My daughter usually has blood every time she sits on the potty, that's quite a few times a day.

It's normal to have a little blood and mucous from the rectum but I do not know about every time..maybe once a month..I would get a second opinion..

it's normal to have mucous and a little blood discharge from the rectum. the rectum is still alive and it produces mucous. the thing with blood is that when a part of the body, in this case the rectum, is not being used for a period of time, it goes through a process of atrophy, which means the rectum's mucosa gets weak and thus bleeds easily. but if the mucous and blood gets too much, better ask the surgeon for a scope just to make sure it's not proctitis or anything. keep us posted.

I have my whole colon in me which is not being used. I have an ileostomy due to a gut injury. The ileo is permanent. There is this thing called disuse colitis. I had a bad bout with that this week with cramping low down and in my rectum and lower abdomen and was putting out cup after cup of bloody mucous. Sometimes a short chain fatty acid enema is needed if the doc determines active disuse colitis. SHort chain fatty acids are part of what normally nourishes the inner lining of the rectum and colon when it is in normal use. When it is no longer used what Hodaya said above does happen. I also would say have her scoped and see what is going on. Daily blood is not the norm, was not for me anyway. Good luck, Rosemary

My blood and mucous has been increasing since I had surgery. I assume it's because I still have UC in the remaining rectum. I could try to heal it with proctofoam or canasa but they didn't work before, why would they work now?

     I had blood and mucus post op.  I thought the blood was coming from my vaginal area and it's been twenty years since I went through the change.  My surgeon said it was all from the operation.  Just for good measure I did see my gyn doctor, had PAP test, MRI of pelvic area and CT scans...all normal.  The blood stopped several months ago (I am one year post op) but the mucus just stopped a few weeks ago.  My surgeon cut out the rectum and colon but left the opening in the anus.  In his opinion, he felt there is less complications when done that way.  I read on here that most doctors sew the anus closed because of cancer issues.  I sure hope not smhair .  I did have a hematoma inside the anus about a month post op and the doctor drained it in his office...yike...talk about pain!  However, good thing he could get to it.  If it were sewn closed...wouldn't he have had to cut through the stitches?  Oh well, I suppose they all have their methods.

I did have an abscess inside my butt wound a week after my surgery, and she did have to cut open some of the stitches to drain it. Since then it's been an open wounds, and sometimes I do wonder if it would have been better to leave the anus. But I guess there are possible complications either way.

I 2nd Hodaya's comment. My surgeon stated exactly that. I too have a rectal stump. Colectomy due to severe diverticulitis. Initial Ileorectal anastomosis which disconnected. Temporary ileostomy. July 26 will be a year and haven't done my reversal. I have occassional pain in my rectum, sometimes more profound than other times. I walk back and forth and about 15 minutes later it subsides. I, however, I'm even shocked myself, have never never...knock on wood....bled. Ask the doctor again, or get a second opinion.

Hi! I have an ileostomy and a rectum and also experience discharge and blood. I would say once a day. I talked to my GI doc (who is excellent by the way, very informative and I've only heard positive feedback from other patients as well as other GI's) and he informed me that this was very normal and I was fortunate to only experience a small amount of bleeding as many patients have it much worse. He also said if it gets worse I could treat it with an enema so that might be something to bring up with your daughters doc?
