I think it would be wonderful for you to get a dog! If you decide to get a puppy, they are a lot of work for the first couple of months with the potty training and constant supervision, since they chew EVERYTHING! I recommend waiting until you're healed from surgery, which is usually around 6 weeks, before getting one, so that you will have the energy to run after them all the time. I also recommend crate training them, so that they learn to hold their potty until it's time to go outside. Dogs are den animals, and as puppies, they feel secure having their beds in a confined area, like a crate.
I have two German Shepherds, female age 2 and male age 3, who are big, lovable babies. They are so much fun and give us unconditional love. Their favorite thing is to go to the beach, and we can't say "beach" or "peach" without them getting super excited and running for the front door. In fact, we just got home from taking them to the beach!
Do you have a breed of dog in mind that you would like to get? Good luck and please keep us posted on what your mom says!

P.S. - We also have a cat, who gets along great with the dogs, and is definitely the "boss" of them!
He was on the bed with me constantly while I was recovering from surgery. The dogs are too big to have on the bed.
