I have a 6 year, he's in 1st grade.  He's very smart in math (he's been dividing for about 2 years now) so the math is really boring him in school.  He's very smart in spelling and science and everything, except reading.  And while he can read, he won't.  He gets in trouble a lot because he won't quit talking and he won't pay attention!  He gets bored during things, and will flat out say, he knows how to do it, he doesn't need to do it again.  I understand what it's like to be bored in school. Anyway, he has been getting in trouble almost everyday since the beginning of school.  He wants to help the other kids, or if they are talking about circles, he pipes up and tells how to find the radius.  And that gets the whole class off track and is making it hard for the other kids to pay attention, cause he keeps doing that.

In his reading group, he won't pay attention to the reading, and as a result is reading on a lower level at school than he does at home.  I have noticed that if i seperate the words,he almost always knows them.  And i can spell the word to him, or he can spell it to me, but he doesn't always know it on the page. He tries to read the book so fast he doesn't concentrate. 

Anyway my husband wants me to have him tested for things, like ADD and other LD's to see if something is wrong with him.  I don't really like the idea of giving him meds if they find out he is ADD.  My husband also thinks we need to take him to a pyschatrist because he pitches fits sometimes, and about two years ago he got mad and crawled under a table.  I'm not sure why my husband thinks thats such a big deal, but everytime my son gets mad about something, my husband brings that up and says, that's just not normal he needs checked out.  i've seen a lot of kids do the exact same thing, in fact where we were eating that night, two other kids were jumping up and down in their chairs.

Anyway, im not sure if we should take him to have him tested and to take him to a pyschiatrist.  He's not doing anything bad, hes not hurting people or hurting himself.  When he gets mad he just yells and storms off, or sometimes throws the classic in the floor kicking fit, and at school he just won't shut up, or he won't finish his work cause he says he already knows it, or hes busy talking and didnt hear the directions.

Anybody have any thoughts?

I would wonder some about the school -- sounds like he's reacting normally as an active kid who is bored and likes to talk ... not exactly medical news that a 6 yr old boy has trouble sitting still. How experienced is his teacher? How big is his class? Do they have enrichment? What kind of work do they do to help kids develop social skills? Are they expecting them to sit still all day long?

I have spent some time in elementary schools (helping new teachers w/math), although it's not my main work, but one thing was clear -- when the activities were either too easy or too hard, there were discipline problems.... and it was easy for the teacher to then blame the kids for acting up, when the main issue was that the lesson was not good (of course, even with a good lesson, there are issues, but the curriculum and the discipline are much more intertwined than people often think.)

And what does "getting in trouble mean?" What happens to him? Does it help him do better in the future or just make him angry?

The first thing that jumped into my mind was that there is something called Math Circles, don't know if they have it in your area, but it's an enrichment program for kids who like math a lot, and it does start that young.... something where they ask a question like, "Are there any numbers between 1, 2, 3, etc" and then the kids develop fractions together, at a much younger age than they'd do these things in school..... doesn't exactly solve the behavior issues....

It does seem like some help for you on strategies for helping him learn to respect other people's space etc would be good.... but yikes, he's 6....

I'm a bit rambley here, but maybe there's something useful here....it would really be best if you were in partnership w/the school on this....

He sounds like a smart kid who just can't sit very still. He could still easily outgrow that. My little brother was the same and now he's 10 and has gotten much better and he doesn't have any learning disorders.

And if it makes you feel any better I can remember getting mad and climbing under tables when I was a kid too. I can also remember climbing under tables just for fun :]

I can't tell you how many times my four year old has been under a table in a restaurant whether it's from being upset, bored, or just acting silly.

I don't know that a psych evaluation is warranted right now, but it may be worthwhile to have some LD screening done to make sure he is ok in reading. He could be doing brilliantly in math yet still struggle with reading. Your mention of separating the words to help him understand them is what leads me to suspect that type of thing.

Also, I personally feel there are lots of ways to help kids with ADHD without putting them on drugs. Sometimes just knowing that there is a reason why his mind works how it does and helping him develop some coping mechanisms can help tremendously. For example, my oldest had to be on Prednisone for awhile for his JRA and it made him really crazy and out of control to the point that he would get overwhelmed and throw fits and cry, etc. Having been on the drug myself for UC, I knew what he was going through. We talked about how he felt when those things happened and some ways to calm down using self talk or removing himself from the situation until he could calm down. It helped him a ton!

For your son, I'm wondering if it would help him in math class to have a small notebook. Then, if the teacher says something that gives him another idea....he could write it down in the notebook instead of saying it out loud and disrupting the class. That might satisfy the urge to express his idea while also helping with reading/writing and giving him something he can look at later to explore those new ideas. He also would probably benefit from sort of accelerated math program (either private or through the school) that would let him flex those muscles a bit more. Speaking of muscles.....I find nothing helps even my boy out better than regular active play and physical exercise.

I'm not a professional in any way....just a mom. :-). Hope some of this helps. At any rate, know you aren't alone.

What a fantastic discussion... not only can we help each other with stomas, bowels and surgery, we're here for each other when it comes to special needs for our kids too! that makes me feel great..:-)

I have a son (12) with ADHD - he's also dyslexic and has sensory issues and auditory processing issues. We are now going through a horrific court case to get the State to find the right school for him and the support he needs. For years and years we fought it - he's just a busy boy, he'll grow out of it etc. But finally had him diagsnosed with ADHD 5 years ago (although I think I knew from when he was about 3). We resisted meds but finally gave in and it was horrible.. he was emotional, frustrated, angry and worse than ever, so we stopped. One particular combination actually made him sleep for 24 hours and I couldn't wake him up. However, now he's very distressed and unstable and there is even talk of bipolar. I do agree that kids are over medicated and overdiagnosed but in our case he's made no progress at school in 2 years, he's emotionally very unstable and dangerous (to the point of climbing and jumping off the roof of the house). so likely we'll head down the medication route again.. sigh. It's very very hard.

It's very difficult to diagnose properly in the U7's although a recent study said they could now in 6 year olds. It's probably a bit too early to get him assessed for ADHD... and you don't know if his behaviour is just 'typical boy' or if it is ADHD. However, a parent knows their child best and if you have concerns or worries, don't ignore them and ask for help. I wish we had earlier and we may not be where we are now. Its drawing a line between what sort of behaviour you'd expect of a 6 year old v's what you son is doing. A tantrum in a 3 year old is acceptable.. but probably not in a 10 year old...For example. I know that when my son is having 'rage' there is nothing we can do.. just hold him and hope it stops soon. However, it sounds like you have a bright cookie on your hands and he's a bit bored. A friend of my son used to cause havoc and bite the teacher etc in reception class - turns out he's a genius now and off to the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 12.

It does sound like he's a bright kid though and not being stimulated at school - especially with maths and this could be adding to his frustration. I think as well that some kids can have a certain type of dyslexia where they can spell but not read.. (?) so it might be worth asking for some LD screening to be done. But again, he's very young and it might not be easy to diagnose at this age.

Like Run for Pancakes says, I'm not a professional at alll.. just sharing my experience and hope it helps.

Sarah: I'm interested in knowing more about your son's sensory issues. My little guy is in physical therapy right now for gross motor delay. He has low muscle tone and we are in the process of ruling out various causes, etc. His PT seems to think he might also have a sensory processing issue. If he is moved in a way that forces him to engage his muscles to balance himself (keep from tipping over, etc) then he gets really anxious and frightened...sometimes to the point of tears. We are wondering now if that sensation isn't being misread in his brain as something dangerous, etc and causing this reaction. There are some other behaviors, too but that is the main one. He is 14 months and doesn't crawl on hands and knees. He can hold onto furniture and stand if we place him there, but he can't cruise along the furniture like babies do. She has pulled himself up at the couch a handful of times since starting therapy, but it is really hard for him to do it. He also cant sit himself up from a laying down position.

Also wanted to say: I hope I didn't come off in my original posting as being against using drugs to treat ADHD and the like. There are good drugs out there and I know they really are the best option for some kids. I just wanted to reassure summer that a diagnosis did not have to lead straight to drug therapy. There are other things that can be tried first. For your son (Sarah) it sounds like he is in a place where any risks from the drugs are much less than the risk he poses to himself by not being on them. You are right, these are tough decisions.

I didn't mean to sound totally anti drug either.... my friend's son started taking ritalin when he was about 6.... have to say, I have never seen a squirmier kid in my life; he could not even remotely sit still for a story or whatever, and it was just very difficult for everyone, including him.... he's going to graduate from high school this year, and doing well as far as I know (they live far away).

Another friend's son was not reading at 6, even though he was clearly a smart kid.... just wasn't into it. He started up a few years later, is in a good college now, and that also worked out.

No point here, just sounds very hard for all of you, and I hope you get the help you need, whether it's just a kind teacher giving a tip or two or some serious intervention.

His teacher has been teaching for 15years, and his class is 22 kids, so fairly large. And because 1st grade only has an aid for about an hour everyday its hard to split the kids in groups, when they get into the older grades they start doing that.
We sent him to math camp, he actually asked to go, over the summer and he loved it! He wanted to go everyday. I think something like that would be good for him, but this is a small town and there isnt anything like that all year round. It would be a 30-45 minute drive at least to find something :( getting in trouble at school means pulling tickets which results in walking during recess or after so many offenses losing the 9 weeks treat and then eventually it would be suspension. But as hes not doing anything bad (hitting, biting) they probably wouldnt go the office suspension route. Hes a very hard child to punish, spanking does nothing, taking things away does nothing, sending him to his room with no tv does nothing, he just sits there and tells himself stories! I finally found that if i lecture him he will stop, because thats the worst thing in the world to him to realize he has disappointed me or hurt my feelings or someone elses. I dont think his behavior, or the fits he pitches are any different than most kids his age, thats a good point to compare him to other kids we sometimes have a hard time with that because he is so mature in ways, hes almost like an old man at times. He even told me that noone wanted to play with an old man like him! He just gets wild sometimes, if we are at home i literally send him outside to run around the house a few times! He gets lots of exeercise and playing time, we just got in from playing football actually. My mom teaches and works with the EC (here that is for kids with disablities) and she doesnt really see anything and said what yall said it is hard to know at 6. The school is going to reassess his reading at christmas and if he is still on grade level they will put him with the reading teacher. I think that i am going to wait until after christmas and see what happens with the school. He can read and he is on level d which level c is where 1st graders should be at this time of year, but its a problem for him because of how he reads. Im not totally against drugs in some situations, ironmum it sounds like you have one of those cases. Im so sorry to hear about your son it must be so hard for yall to see your sons problems and not be able to help him. Thats the worst thing as a parent is to see your child hurt or in trouble and not know what to do.
Thank you all so much for reading and giving your thoughts, i put more stock in a moms opinion than a drs most of the time :). I say when you have a baby you get a medical degree too!

sommerstorm, as you can see there are so many caring people who want to make others' lives better. Unfortunately most of us know or are learning a lot about being colostomates and we're probably lacking in our diagnostic and treatment abilities relative to ADD or ADHD. I did a lot of substitute teaching in middle and high schools and saw some wonderful results when the youngsters were tested and treated properly. Sadly, I saw the other side of that coin when parents just didn't think their child needed professional evaluation. Please, make a $2 bet with your husband then let a child psychologist determine the winner.

Hi all.. interesting discussion. Dont' worry no it didn't come across like that at all on the whole drugs thing! medication is pretty controversial and not a topic people like to talk about. I know how hard it is to live with a child with ADHD and I'm prepared to try anything to help him. If it works, makes him more stable, allows him to focus, access school and get a job then I'm all for it. Without drugs ADHD kids can end up in a heap of trouble -prison, unemployed or even worse.

He has a 'sensory modulation disorder' diagnosed by an occupational therapist. Not treated by meds but how it manifests itself is that he chews buttons off things, won't wear trousers (shorts all year round!), doesn't like scratchy clothes or bedding, seeks out sensory stimulation constantly - chewing, grinding his teeth, touching, fiddling, stroking, cuddles etc etc even at 12. Sounds different to your little guy Run for Pancakes.. that sounds tough :-(

Summerstorm.. I guess what I was trying to say in my original post is that we waited to get him assessed and I wish we hadn't. If you or your husband have a sense that something isn't right.. then you're probably right. Get him assessed now by a professional and get the ball rolling to understanding his needs and putting help in place to meet them. Why wait??? Of course he could well just be a typical 6 year old and this is all just part of him growing up and testing the boundaries.. but there's no harm in assessing and investigating. Wish you well with it all.

On the Reading thing, it's very common for children that excel and enjoy math, to think reading is boring and have a hard time with it. the science and math sections of our brains are separate from reading and writing. Often kids can excel at one and kind flop at the other. (I was the opposite of your son, loved reading and writing, reading chapter books at 5, but couldn't do basic math.) Assuming he knows his alphabet well, since he can read when given help, maybe you could find word games or interactive books about topics that he enjoys and just sit with him every night for maybe 15 minutes and having reading time. try creating a star or sticker chart with rewards for getting through reading time, or read a whole page without help. A real goal, aside from just the reading may be just the encouragement he needs. You could also try reading to him say every Sunday before bed. Pick a book that you can span over several Sundays to get through and just read to him, like story time! It may spark an interest in stories, like you stop reading right before something happens and then he has to wait and before you know it he'll be asking to have Sunday story time on Monday because he want's to know what happens.

I like the idea someone else had about him writing down the things that he keeps saying out loud in class. It sounds to me like he's a typical 6 year old that has a lot of enthusiasm for the things he likes, and could give a flying flip about the things he doesn't like or struggles with. I don't have children, but I am a trained teacher, so my suggestions are based on things I've used, other teachers have used or that just seem like they might work. I don't believe that one incident of a tantrum where he went under a table means anything. if he did that every time he got upset, maybe. I threw tantrums till I was 6 or 7 but i was just ornery like that :) Of course a spanking sure worked on me! I'd give it more time before you see a psychiatrist. If you have reserves, try waiting it out. If your husband insists, then it can't hurt although with the info you've shared it does seem excessive to see a psychiatrist. One last thing, i'm not sure if they exist, but there may be children's reading books that are designed around math, or for kids that like math. my college had special English classes for the engineering students because their brains are wired differently, and I know some people that took them and said it was the first time they didn't hate their English class. it may be a long shot, but there might be something out there.

my mom is an ec teacher, and my sis is a first grade teacher, and they pretty much said the same thing. i think since he is reading about grade level, just struggling, we are going to wait until the school does the next evaluation at christmas and i am going to keep doing his sight words, which is a lot of what he is having trouble with. he is doing the 4th grade list of sight words, but having trouble with the easier ones. Which is odd to me and other people. If he hasn't improved by christmas the school was going to send him to the reading specialist at school. last year at the end of the year, he tested on b, which was level, however he was actually reading d level books (i know that doesnt mean a lot to yall, lol) but his kinder teacher knew he could do better so she had him go with the reading teacher, and he tested better on d than he did on c! i think what they are concerend about, and me also, is that we know he should be doing better, but it seems like he either isn't trying, or something just isnt clicking. so if my working with him everyday, and i think i will start doing some type of book that he should be interested in, and the work at school, doesnt move him up a few levels by christmas then i will take him to have him tested. my mom has said that at 6 it will be hard to diagnose. she is postive he won't diagnose as low (which means under average IQ or ability to do tasks appropriate for his age) but says it is possible he could have an LD but at such a young age, like many of yall have said, it would be hard to be sure about.
i havent heard of any books based on math, but i will see if my mom or sister can find anything. he is really looking forward to map and math camp next summer. i wish i could do something like that with him all year. when i was in school, i was always really bored (i used to be smart, lol) my Mom and Dad had spent a lot of time working with me before school on all the subjects. And my Dad has worked with my son a lot too, neither of us work so we had a lot of time for that. My Dad said (jokingly) sometimes im not sure its worth making a kid smart, they just get in trouble with it! of course he doesnt mean that and we wont stop teaching him things, he asks to learn them, even if it does make him bored at school. i rambled, lol.
almost everyone i've talked to says a psych evaluation for a few tantrums is not needed. he was like 4 or 5 when he did the table thing. i spend a lot of time at school, volunteering and i see a whole lot worse! 4th graders who cry over little toys, 6th graders cussing their moms. i think my husband is just a little overboard about that, he works out of town and has never spent a lot of time around children. i don't think he knows what they are like all the time.

I agree with others, I worked as a nanny and I have definitely seen much "crazier" behavior from young children who are perfectly normal. He just sounds like a regular kid for his age :)

The Eleventh Hour: A Curious Mystery Graeme Base (this last one is amazing, challenging even for grown ups, but entertaining for younger kids too.....not all of the challenges are math either)

These are at a variety of levels, both math and reading wise..... you could go to the library and take a look. There really are some high quality books out there. Great idea....

BTW for my job I teach math to future elementary teachers.... so I know these books more from the perspective that they are good mathematically than from reading them w/kids or working on kids reading... my students have used them w/kids they work with.

What a great discussion.....

I have a 9yr old son. He too in pre-school started showing signs of frustration. Gosh, was I concerned when he started K. Had him see a school counselor once a week, for peace of mind, and was told I should be so thankful in having such a smart, articulate and gracious child. In K, he was just way above the other students, first to read, everything came so easy. But boredom turned into discipline issues, which I'm still dealing with. I try to volunteer in the classroom as much as I can. As well as your son, the reading is an issue because of concentration....he rushes. Thinking back, I was the same....gifted in school but always bored so I acted out by talking too much and sometimes shouting out answers. All throughout grammer school, I received a check next to 'exercise self control.' Just last week, my son finished a test in speed time and started fidgeting, pulled this string he noticed under his desk, and I got a phone call that the desk could of detached. I work as hard as I can with the teachers to come up with extra things to do to occupy him...buddy up for tutoring, giving him extra work, giving him papers to grade, etc. If the teachers were not on board with me, supporting me to support my son, I'd be in a different school. But I too get frustrated with the constant phone calls, and the constant pull me over to the side at dismissal that he did this or that. Nonetheless, he has improved over the past couple years, and I believe he will become a wonderful human being and I couldn't be prouder.......as I'm sure you are too!!!!!!

Now my 8 year old daughter...whole set of other issues...lol :-)

Oh.....just read what you wrote about running around to get his energy out. My son's K teacher asked me one day if my son runs around the house after school. I said yes, he endlessly paces back and forth, how did you know? She said that because it is such a long and structured day, and especially for the brighter children, that they behave this way.....her son did the same and he's now an attorney. I tumbled and jumped rope all day long.

Last year, my son was on an academic Olympics team, with math being his strong suit, and it was just what he needed. All throughout grammer school I too competed academically representing my school. That math camp you had your son in is just what he needs, find similar outlets. Keep trying, you sound like a great mom! My mother was great too in her own way, but coming from Germany at age 30 and having me at 46, she not only didn't have the strength to work with me regarding school, but the language barrier... she was timid. Luckily I went to a great school and had caring teachers.

Haven't read all the replies so at the risk of being repetitive...
My son behaved just as you describe when he was that age. I dreaded going to school conferences. I was told that he would never be more than a B student. Today he is a 50-year-old math teacher with post graduate degrees and a tennis coach.

I,too, was a high school math teacher and had several kids in my classes who were diagnosed with ADHD. Never noticed that the drugs were very helpful. Some parents would say that they were at the end of their rope with their son's behavior. I would try to offer hope. I've seen some of those students as they've grown up and.... what a surprise, they turned out OK.

In my opinion, you should take him for a physical checkup to rule out illness and have him checked for dyslexia or any vision problems. Try to feed him a healthy (calming) diet. In my generation, we did not realize the impact of some foods on children. (Fast food wasn't popular.) AVOID DRUGS.

My son was happiest when involved in sports and other activities he enjoyed. Keep him busy. I'm sure you've gotten a lot of good replies and hope this is helpful. Hang in there.

I have been surrounded by ADHD people my whole life. Family members with Adhd: my mother, two siblings, my husband, two children and one grandson. Ritalin worked well for my mother but no one else. It made my husband and children feel very il. We tried every drug available, none worked. Early identification and learning coping skills/techniques worked wonders. Different coping skills/techniques are taught at different ages. Our best source of information and help was the children's program in Portland, or. Perhaps they could give you a reference to someone in your area. They even helped my husband!
My mother went to med school at Harvard. My siblings went to and taught at MIT. My children went to Georgetown and Columbia University. I disagree with the identification of ADHD as a learning disorder. It is different and can be tough to live with for both the person and his/her family. There are also a lot of advantages to having ADHD. My favorites are the willingness to try new things and not to give up when faced with failures. I suspect many successful entrepreneurs and inventors had ADHD.

At the risk of jinxing myself he did much better at school this week, only pulled 2 tickets and only 1 was for talking, the other was for forgetting his homework. However...he apparently can't behave at school and at home because he has been beyond wild, lol. Its not helping that it was cold and rainy most of the week. I ordered one of those books that blueglass suggested, he is excited for it to get here. The teacher didn't change his reading group because he did so much better since he calmed down, and she moved his little gf from next to him. They talked a lot but he is the only one who got caught his words "she's got enough sense to whisper, and I just don't" I think that helped a lot too. I am at the school a lot (15) hours Friday alone, I've probably been out there at least 20 days since the start of school. That does make me feel better, even though I'm not in the classroom I am able to see a lot of what goes on. I figured out a racing game out of sight words, and am working on bingo which someone suggested to me and is an awesome idea! I have to schedule his yearly physcial and will talk to the dr a bit about it, and see what they think. My sis may reevaluate him herself and see how he does or my mom might take him in with her one day, she's the head of ec, and have him informally checked out. She has looked at him compared to a lot of the kids classified as ld or add or adhd and talked to some of the other ec teachers and they all think its just a case ofbeing bored and a little boy! But if he hasn't gone up to the reading level e or f by christmas I'm going to take him to a place for an actual on the books testing.
This thread has helped so much to read the stories about the kids who were like mine and grew up to be lawyers and drs and such! And it helps to know we aren't the only ones going throguh this. It makes me feel guilty that I am worried that my kid is too smart though, if that makes sense

I have to schedule his yearly physcial and will talk to the dr a bit about it, and see what they think. My sis may reevaluate him herself and see how he does or my mom might take him in with her one day, she's the head of ec, and have him informally checked out. She has looked at him compared to a lot of the kids classified as ld or add or adhd and talked to some of the other ec teachers and they all think its just a case ofbeing bored and a little boy! But if he hasn't gone up to the reading level e or f by christmas I'm going to take him to a place for an actual on the books testing.
This thread has helped so much to read the stories about the kids who were like mine and grew up to be lawyers and drs and such! And it helps to know we aren't the only ones going throguh this. It makes me feel guilty that I am worried that my kid is too smart though, if that makes sense
