jpouch surgery is really difficult, but if you have a good surgeon it shouldnt be a problem. Most of the people who have trouble with their pouches find out they actually have crohns, there is sometimes a misdiagnosis.
I have a bag, i chose it because i didnt want to ever go to the bathroom the regular way again! My son was not quite 2 at the time i had surgery, and i knew i couldnt do two surgeries with him, and go through the first couple of weeks after the jpouch is hooked up, where you go a lot, but its not painful and it goes away, its just until the pouch gets used to it. i don't have a lot of info on that since i don't have a jpouch. I also am the kind of person who worries about everything, and i knew if i got a jpouch i would constantly be worried that i would be the small percentage of people who has trouble.
My life is very normal, much more so than with UC. I don't mean this to sound bad, but how normal is your life right now? I don't take lots of meds, i don't run for bathrooms, i don't miss out on foods and parties. I go to school and help with my kid, i go to the store, i go to clubs, i go out to dinner with friends. Life is the way it was before UC, and actually a little better cause i appreciate it more. as for sex, well with UC i never wanted to, i felt horrible, i was fat from pred, and always worrying about havign to go to the bathroom. now that's sexy! :D Now i just wear a band around my bag and it holds it up, my husband doesnt care at all, he's really happy that he gets to have sex now, lol. and honestly, men dont care about much during sex except for one thing, we all know that!
As for going to the bathroom, for me with a bag, i don't know it, it just comes out all the time. occasionally i can feel it. but i empty my bag like 4-6 times a day, usually when i pee. with jpouches most of them say they empty when they pee too. there is no rushing though, and no pain, thats the best part!
most of my pain went away right away, i still have some joint problems from the pred, but those are going away slowly. the short pain from surgery is soooo worth the results!
noone with UC should be miserable when their is surgery out there. if you can find a med that isn't really dangerous then thats great, for me i was tired of trying meds, i wanted to beat UC and get my life back!
If you have more things you want to try, certaintly try them, but it's very smart of you to go ahead and educate yourself on surgery, so you wont be blindsided or terriffied if it comes to it!
good luck!
