severe irritation around ostomy

I have had a gradual increase in the degree and size of irritation around my ostomy. It's gotten so bad that my appliance wont hold and it's very painful! I have an appointment to see an ostomy nurse Thursday and I'm almost afraid to show it to her. It's just raw and through the skin halfway around and about an inch outward from my stoma. I'm using powders and skin prep, convex wafers and ostomy seals but nothing seems to be helping. HELP!!!

I'm sorry you're having skin issues. It's possible that you have a fungal infection, which can be cleared up with an antifungal powder called Nystatin.

I would call your ostomy nurse and explain what's going on, in case she wants to see you before Thursday. I hope that's all it is and that you can get it cleared up quickly.

I agree w/Cecilia. Call your nurse and see if you can get in early, and don't be afraid to show it to her, I'm sure she's seen worse.

great news! No infection or fungus....just leakage. Nurse used steroid cream and a new technique for my appliance and its halfway healed after just 4 days.

Hi Tony,

What's your new appliance technique? I'm having similar symtoms with my new loop stoma and the nurse is coming this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

Besides using the steroid cream applied to just the affected area, I use stoma powder then skin prep spray. let that dry. Then she added a stomahesive barrier with the hole cut the same size as my appliance hole and surrounded the skin side with a barrier seal. Then applied my convex appliance on top of that as normal. Press hard for a good seal and use an appliance belt. I was barely getting one day of seal before, the first application of this new method lasted for a solid 4 days plus the amount of healing was amazing. This will be my new method from now on!! I think the extra stomahesive barrier prohibits deterioration of the my appliance and adds days of extra protection.

Yeah, it's the main thing, otherwise everything just feels too unstable. So far, if I use convex light with an eaken, it's secure and doesn't leak. Ijust have to wait until tomorrow when the stoma nurse comes to figure out what is happening with the skin. I hope it is just healing from bad irritation. I used lots of stoma powder since it looked so bad and am hoping to see an improvement when the nurse comes tomorrow.

After caring for an ostomy for 23 years, I thought I knew how to fix my probem on my own. I guess I don't know everything after all....

Why would you? Unless you're a stoma nurse..... new problem, new solution; just glad you're better.
