Pyoderma Gangrenosum and Proper Pouching

Hello,

I was just diagnosed with pyoderma on Wednesday and for those who are unfamiliar, it is a weeping wound on which I have to apply greasy cream.  From all of the pouch changing and such, my skin is getting irritated as well. 

Does anyone have any advice on less irritating pouching systems that don't require alcohol-based skin preps, etc?  I just need it as a temporary thing until I can figure out what will work for my situation once I am healthy. 

I'll be going to the ostomy nurse Wednesday, but I am jsut curious if anyone here can help me.

All Care skin prep is alcohol based. Safe and Simple skin prep is not. That is all I can tell you. Good luck. Rosemary

I've never used a skin prep with any of my pouches. Just stoma powder around the base of the stoma if I had red/broken skin and sometime a barrier ring or something similar. I've used 2 pieces from Hollister and Coloplast and now a 1 piece from Marlen. What is the purpose of the skin prep? I feel like I've missed out on something all this time!

There are a number of no-sting (no alcohol) skin preps out there. Coloplast makes one, and so does 3M. I use the 3M one, but also have used the coloplast.

Pancakes - the prep protects the skin by coating it with a not greasy surface, and it actually helps the flange to stick better. That is all I use now. No rings, tape or powder.

I first got it in 2003....I was instructed to just use moist bandages with sterile water to cover the wounds to keep it from drying out. I changed the dressings twice daily.

Thanks. I am slowly healing from this. It is getting better, but not quickly. I am changing the appliance everyday, and luckily, my skin is not as irritated as I expected it to be.
