CR admitting me to Hospital TODAY

Hi all,

Saw my CR yesterday he said I need to be hospital, going to many times with UC. I will be admitted in a few hours, the doctor will try to calm my UC down with intravenous IV's and a iv food pick line. Don't really know what that is he said I will have no food for 5 days. If my colon doesn't calm down I will be having emergency ileostomy this weekend. I am really scare but it has to be better then what I am going through now. He said my GI should of admitted me three weeks ago. ARGGHHH..

I know your scared, just try to calm down. You are in good hands, thank god your cr is taking charge. Hopefully you will be receptive to this action of treatment and you will be getting out soon, without the ileostomy. You must of really been suffering lately, I do hope that you will soon be receiving relief!!!

Salamore, No matter what the doc decides is better for you at least anything is better that what you have been going through. Relief is what you need and relief is what you'll get. My daughter had to have her entire large colonremoved and the small intestine was attached directley to the rectum. She is now doing so very well. Trust in your doc.

Salamore, Good luck. Be glad this is getting addressed. Sounds like you have some good help coming your way. Normal to be scared, but sounds like this doc is on the right track. God bless, and prayers to you. Rosemary

I'm glad you are getting some better care, hopefully soon followed by relief from your symptoms. Try not to be scared. Focus on resting and letting your body recover.

Sounds like you're in the right place. Hope things work out for the best, whatever that might mean. It is scary, but it wouldn't really be emergency surgery, if they're planning for that possibility 5 days in advance.... if you need it, you should be able to have the team you chose and to discuss options before.

Try to rest (as much as one can in the hospital) and let other people take care of you for now. Better times are ahead.

I was in the same serious state you are in right now. Believe me, surgery is the way to go when you are this bad. As scary as it is, it's also a blessing. If you have surgery you will notice that even thru the post op pain, you will feel SO much better getting that diseased colon out of your body. I noticed the relief immediately after surgery. Hang in there and all the best to you.

I also had a similar experience happen to me and like Marianne said you will definitely have instant relief! Opt for the surgery. Adaption to something brand new like this is totally worth it since you will not be suffering anymore, and you will learn that right away!

Everything is going to be okay! You are in really good hands, God's hands. I know how scary it is to have surgery, but the truth is, they give you medicine to fall asleep, you wake up, and it's over. Then, they give you really good pain medicine after surgery, so you don't feel much pain, and you heal one day at a time. Before you know it, you're back to work and living life to the full again! :-)

Being UC free is all you need to focus on right now. I know it's hard to imagine a cure, but there is one, and it's surgery. You will never have to go to the bathroom 20+ times a day again. You will not be sick anymore. You will have energy and will be able to live a very healthy life again. You'll be able to eat anything you want and not be in pain anymore. You have so many wonderful days/weeks/years ahead of you!

Please keep us posted on how things are going. We're here for you every step of the way. You are in my thoughts and prayers. (((hugs)))

My son also became very sick with UC and was hospitalized. He decided on a colectomy and then had a J pouch built about 4 months later. He had the same result that has already been mentioned.....instantaneous relief. Of course, you are dealing with major surgery but that awful feeling of UC is GONE. For me it was like magic watching the life return to him on a daily basis.

That was two years ago. I cannot tell you how well he is doing. He is healthy in every way, has more energy than he knows what to do with and is living life exactly the way a young man should.

I remember very clearly one Saturday night about a month after his colectomy. Some of his friends came to "collect" him to take him out for the evening. As they were walking down the street I could hear his laughter for ages...I started crying and could not stop....it had been SO LONG since he had been in such a good place and could just laugh and enjoy his friends.

Even though surgery is by no means a walk in the park for us it was a blessing. There is not a day goes by that I do not say a silent "thank you" to his surgeon.

You asked about an IV picc line. This is a means of giving you nutrition while by-passing the colon. The problem is that they cannot just give you nutrients through a regular IV that goes into a normal vein....the nutrients need to be in a high concentration and going into a regular vein they would not get diluted enough and would cause problems for the vein.

Using ultrasound so they can follow what they are doing, a small tube is inserted into the vein near the top of the arm and is fed through to the large vein near the heart. This is a sterile procedure and will be done in a sterile room. I know it sounds awful but my son really did not mind it and actually found it very interesting...they will let you watch the ultrasound if you want.

I agree with so many others...this is for the best. You should not have to live like this and like others have said before me, I was as sick as you are when I had my surgery, and I still view it as such a blessing. I was hardly in pain after surgery becuase it was SO much better than having that awful colon in me. You will feel so much better without UC and soon this will be a memory.
