Will Stomahesive paste irritate stoma if it turtle necks up around it?

it shoudnt hurt it. i had the paste all over my everytime and it was ok. the extra just came out the bag when it was ready.

I use an Eakin Ring and a little bit of stoma paste (I like Convatec the best) for a little extra caulking between the ring and stoma as I tend to get a gap there before the Eakin has a chance to turtleneck and stool can get in there. The paste fills that area in nicely. This was a suggestion by my stoma nurse. The stoma paste does not irritate my stoma. Sometimes the alcohol in it will burn any skin areas that are irritated, but this only lasts a few seconds. Anyway, with the Eakin and paste combo I get turtlenecking galore and I think it is a good thing. I tried Coloplast barrier rings a few weeks ago and they barely turtlenecked which resulted in the most raw skin around my stoma since surgery. (Why I feel compelled to try samples when I know what is already working is beyond me:). I went back to the Eakin and paste combo and things healed up. Sometimes my Eakin and paste combo turtlenecks as much as 1/4 to 3/8 inch up my stoma. As I mentioned in another post, I have a fairly long stoma so this isn't an issue. I know as soon as the turtlenecking starts to erode and disappear in 3-4 days, it is time to change my appliance or I will get parastomal skin breakdown.

After surgery I had a really good home health nurse who knew a lot about ostomies. I had little sliver of irritation right under my stoma where it flopped over. She suggested putting a small piece of Duoderm Signal over it and it worked great. I still use this sometimes when that skin area gets irritated on occasion. First I put a very thin layer of powder just over the exact area of irritation... not beyond it, brush off the excess, swab it with Cavillon skin prep and then cut a piece of Duoderm that is a 1/4 inch larger than the sliver of irritation and stick it on. It butts up right against my stoma, but because the Duoderm is soft, it doesn't hurt the edge of the stoma. It is absolutely essential to make sure the area is dry before putting the Duoderm on or it won't stick. This is tricky right next to the wet, drippy stoma, so I use a blow dryer after I put the powder and cavillon on. After the Duoderm is stuck on, I put the Eakin on, then my wafer, and then the stoma past caulk between my Eakin and stoma. I cannot go longer than 4 days with the Duoderm or stool will start to seep under it and re-irritate the skin, but as long as I change every 3-4 days (which I always do anyways), it works well. I don't think Duoderm would work with really weepy skin, but for spots that are just red and haven't reached the weepy stage it works well. I don't know if this will work in your situation... but just thought I would share.

First I put the Eakin on as tightly as possible around my stoma (I rip one side, hook it around my stoma and then smush the ripped end back together). Then I put my flat Convatec wafer on (with no paste). Because I cut my wafers 1/16" to 1/8" larger than my stoma (have to as my stoma expands and contracts a lot), I can see the 1/16" to 1/8" sliver of the Eakin next to the stoma. This is the part of the Eakin that eventually turtlenecks up. AFTER I put the wafer on is when I fill in any gaps between my stoma and the Eakin with the tiniest bit of stoma paste. I wet my finger, put a little blob of paste on it, and then work it into any gaps between the Eakin in my stoma where I can still see a little skin. My stoma is very active, so this tiny bit of caulking prevents the stool from getting in that gap until the Eakin swells, which usually takes about an hour or two for me. It doesn't really form a mountain over my stoma, just a healthy turtleneck around the base. Again, my stoma is 1.5 inches tall, so it can handle a lot of turtlenecking. Eventually the paste and Eakin sort of meld together as they both turtleneck. Hope this makes sense. It is really hard to describe.
