Hey guys! This is actually going to be my first post, and nice to meet you all...I'd like to start with a question and a predicament, but first I want to explain my situation to illustrate it better.
I have a urostomy, but I have no need for a pouch. I'm a 25 year old man who due to a host of complications deriving from spina bifida and other issues, wear a incontinence brief which essentially has taken over the need for any pouches or such all my life with little to no incident. The most that has ever happened problem wise usually is an irritation of the stoma from a lack of proper hydration and irritation from the material from the brief rubbing against it, and has always been dealt with fast with an application of bacitracin and time.
Recently though, I have developed a new issue. I'm not entirely sure what caused it (though if I were to guess, its probably from too much physical activity around the urostomy area externally against it somehow) but the skin on the ostomy itself appears to look as though its been cut or semi broken. It isn't really bad at all, the descript
ion is basically that it looks otherwise fine with what looks like a break in the urostomy's skin, making it look like the
opening of it has extended to the side, looking like it was pulled or cut slightly too much to the side. Where the skin is 'torn', the interior of it when accidently brushed when I apply anything I think may help such as bacitracin, it appears reddish, and gives me the appearance of looking bloody or injured, but Im not sure if its simply the look of the interior of the ostomy more personally than intended (supposed to look reddish). There is no actual bleeding except for one instance last night as of writing this, where it was so minor and only noticeable after dabbing lightly on it once, and had no more blood than say, accidently biting your cheek and having a microscopic amount. I also should add, there is a tiny tiny bit of whitish skin near the affected area, only on one side, not sure if this is a concern. This has also been like this consistently since early December, and the situation has been largely the same.
My only question and concern is, should I be worried more than I am about
this? If I can take care of this myself properly, I would much rather, as the only doctor I have to deal with it is a 2 hour ride to Philadelphia ( I live on the NJ/PA border, quite a long drive) and rely on others for a ride, and don't want to inconvienience anyone for what ends up being nothing at all. Could this be a problem, or since it hasn't changed or turned into any kind of a problem, could I just deal with it at my next check up with said doctor scheduled in a couple months, or the sooner I get it looked at the better? I must admit, I get paranoid from time to time, and waver between thinking its not that bad since it hasnt turned into anything threatening and changed other than my descript
ion, but if its a potentially salvagable situation thats going to be a problem from procrastination and poor care on my part, Id like to get it dealt with and know ahead of time I guess. If its not a big deal, what should I do? Any suggestions? Continue to apply bacitracin and hope the issue fixes itself?
Thanks!
