Found your bio on another post. Maybe it is what happened to me and the mashed potato as long as you have your ileo. I think the loop of bowel right in back of the stoma is somewhat movable and can become clogged. You didn't do any mashed potato in New ORleans did you? Rosemary

Wow, Summerstorm. So sorry to hear you are going through this. Did the twist just happen spontaneously out of nowhere? That is crazy. I hope you feel better soon and am sending healing thoughts your way.

Oh goodness, glad you went in! Been down that road before - I was still in hospital following surgery when mine happened. Hope they get you "straightened out" (hahah!) soon and on your way home :)

Oh no, Leah, I'm so sorry!! You're in good hands (God's hands) and your surgeon will straighten everything out. Thank goodness you were home when this happened and not on a cruise ship. Saying prayers that everything goes smoothly and perfectly. Love you!

Summer! That is so sucky. I know; I've been there many times. I had so many problems with twisting in the first year.

To explain to some of you who had asked, it's not caused by something she ate. It can happen randomly. YOur intestines get twisted like a balloon animal. Is yours at the stoma site, Leah?

Usually the only way to fix it is surgery, though my surgeon started just inserting a catheter and leaving it for a day or two to avoid surgery, and that's helped. Leah, talk to your surgeon and see if that's an option.

I had the same thing happen in 2010 after an extended trip. We were home for two days when I ended up in extreme pain due to what they called a volvulous. My sigmoid colon twisted 540 degrees (yes, one and a half complete twists) and completely shut itself. They tried to untwist it with a colonoscopy, but couldn't, so I had surgery to remove 18 inches. I had the bag for a couple of months because the surgeon said the ends of my colon were too inflamed to reconnect at the time and that doing so would greatly increase the chance of infection. During my recovery, I had a small bowel obstruction that sent me in for another week, followed by pneumonia (likely caused by aspirating something from the NG tube from the obstruction). So, i got to spend three weeks of May, 2010 in the hospital. I was in for five days in July, 2010 for the reconnect and everything has been fine since.

Awwwhhhhh Summer!   I am so sorry.  I am no stranger to blockages in my past.    Did you eat something to set this off... or is it just a twist or scar tissue?   Hope you doing well.   Chin up.  :)

Good luck with the surgery. HOpe it can be done lap for you. Maybe an adhesion? Let us know if/when you are able what he says was the cause. YOu have been well for five years. I guess any of us with ostomies can be vulnerable to things like this happening. Glad you were finished with your cruise. They can always air lift off those ships though. BUT just as well you were home.
