Hi I'm new... Anyone pregnant with ostomy? Help

Hi, I'm 28 and have had my ileostomy for a year due to severe UC, I'm currently 25 weeks pregnant with our 3rd child and looking for people who are/have been in a similar situation. The pregnancy so far has gone well, Ive been told I will have a vaginal birth as I've had 2 very easy births previously, and they want to avoid a c-section at all costs (to avoid causing more scarring and adhesions) my stoma hasn't changed at all yet, however last night I had a painful blockage/obstruction and cleared it myself with drinking lots and laying on my side pushing baby away from the stoma, I now have achy pains in my tummy (similar to pains after surgery) and I'm scared to eat anything (not ideal when your starving all the time, eating for 2) I'm only 25 weeks along and have a long way to go, so I'm worried now that I'm going to keep getting blockages until the birth : (
Any advice from other mums or ladies that are pregnant now would be great, I was really enjoying this pregnancy until last night and I'm now really scared and apprehensive, I don't mind going through this pain for my unborn as we have wanted him for so long, but I'm just terrified that one of these blockages may not resolve itself in future and may cause premature labour/induction etc... Xxx

Welcome! I don't have any advice here because I haven't been pregnant with my illeostomy. I do think that some people willchime in about their experiences thought, because I've been getting all of my best advice and encouragement on this forum. I'm sorry you had a scary blockage experience, it sounds like you knew exactly the right thing to do. Am not sure if it is such a good idea not to eat, why don't you try something safe that will go through quickly, like a thin cream of wheat with cups of hot tea?

Eat lightly as suggested above and do some protein drinks. Then talk with your GYN and ileo doc. It may be the position of the baby relative to your stoma. I think the loop of intestine that is brought out to make the stoma is somewhat free floating and can bend and twist. I'm not a doc, but my original ileo surgeon said that may have been what happened to me when I had a food blockage on mashed potato that I cleared myself with tons of hot tea. Best wishes. I have a good friend who has an ileostomy and had her only child with it. In speaking to her she never had this issue at all. This might be worth a mention to your ob and surgeon, and something they may want to keep an eye on. It doesn't happen to everyone. The only thing my friend did tell me, is that she had her baby while both her ob AND surgeon were present. Just in case there was an issue and she needed to be sectioned, the surgeon was there to kind of direct things since he was the one who better knew the "plumbing" aspect. As it turned out though, she was able to have a vaginal birth with no problems.

Congratulations!!!! I was joking with my husband the other day about having a 4th. I was unable to breastfeed due to the meds I had to be on to be well during pregnancy/postpartum. Now, med free, it would be so nice to do it all over again without the stress of my illness and the toxic meds. we really are done though; three is plenty for us!!!

Thanks for your posts, I've had 3 people reply on a different forum who have all had blockages by this point so that's a relief, it's common apparently as baby presses against the bowel, and I've been told by sonographers that I have a very large baby lol...
I think it was probably a combination of not drinking enough and eating a huge plateful of asparagus, Mmmm it's my favourite but it doesn't agree!
Colitis-sux, aww I would love a forth too, I'm not going to have the reversal until we hopefully have another one, but will see how this labour goes first!
Yes I loved breastfeeding too, I fed both of mine for 2 years each, as I didn't have UC with the first and was only on suppositories with my second and I'm not on any meds now so looking forward to nursing again : ) my husband wants another one and this one hasn't been born yet,lol..
