I have colonic inertia, chronic constipation and pelvic floor issues . i did all the tests never did the gastric emptying though. I did a loop ileostomy for 14 months it worked great I did have some issues ie. thick stool and such then my colon got diverting colitis chose to have an end ileostomy. I am about
6 weeks out have had 1 full blown small bowel blockage (not to scare you) was hospitalized for 6 days it resolved on its own (thank God) I just had another which resolved by the time i got to the hospital. I also have a stricture in my stoma hopefully will be resolved soon as I see my original surgeon on tuesday. I am watching my diet as i have adhesions which may have caused the 6 day admission. BUT!! I still would not have rehooked up my bowels as even though i am having issues now this is far better than what I was dealing with prior to surgery. Yes i did have doubts and sometimes still do but i know this is the best for me. Feel free to message me anytime. The best suggestion that i can give you is do a lot of research go to an ostomy support group in advance ask them questions that you might be having. Then find the best surgeon your insurance will allow and talk to him and get the tests. It might take a while but well worth the wait. DEBBI

I did not have colonic inertia, but a word from the wise, if you are thinking of colon removal and hook small intestine to rectum or anus, be sure and get full work up to see if you have pelvic floor issues too. You would not want colon removal and hook small intestine to rectum if your pelvic floor muscles that control angulation of rectum did not work. So you need to know is the issue with colon only, or also with rectum, anal muscles, and or pelvic floor. If issues with more than just the colon being inert then an ileostomy would be for you. You would also need a transit test that shows transit of small intestine as well as gastric emptying. Mayo clinic has scintigraphic transit test only 2 days: shows gastric emptying, small bowel transit, and large bowel transit. AND they have all the pelvic floor testing and rectal testing. WISH I had gone there first. Rosemary
