Surgery to fix a prolapse...anyone with experience please read

Hello,
My daughter has been having issues with her stoma prolapsing since Thanksgiving. It seems that every 2 or 3 weeks she has another prolapse, usually we've been really lucky and it goes back in by itself at night. However there have been a few times that it's remained prolapsed for a few days. It is extremely painful for her when it is prolapsed. She can't move and will just lay on the couch and watch TV.
We have finally decided to go ahead with surgery. Which will require her surgeons to "tack" her intestines to the inside of her abdominal wall. She has crohn's, but we think that the crohn's is under control right now with the right meds (Azathriprine) so we are hoping that the surgeons will not need to re-sect anymore bowel or have to move the stoma to the other side. Both options have been explained to us in case they see that her intestines are severely inflamed. But again her GI does not think that is the case.

I am so worried and would love to hear from others that have had the surgery. I want to know if it was successful in preventing more prolapses, and my other concern is that since she has crohns do you think this will cause us more problems in the future.

Again, I would love to hear from other ostomates that had corrective surgery to fix their prolapse problems.

for the almost three years that i had a colostomy i had prolapsing issues as well. at first it would prolapse a couple of inches but over the course of a few months it eventually would roll out 10-12 inches. i literally had my large bowel hanging out of my abdomen. the only reason it didn't come out further was because it hit the bottom of the bag and stopped. and just like your daughter, at night it improved simply because of gravity it rolled back in. because of this, the only time i could change my bag was as soon as i woke up before it would prolapse again.

the prolapsing itself didn't hurt much but at times it would give me a belly ache. the worst of it was not being able to change the bag when i needed. the prolapsing controlled when i could change it. my routine would be to go to bed, let the stoma roll inside over night and when i woke up i had to run to the bathroom to change the bag when it needed to be changed.

i had corrective surgery at the cleveland clinic and the surgeon made the stoma flush with my abdomen which was great. but again, after about 6 months it began to prolapse again and continued to until i had my j pouch surgery and rid myself of a stoma altogether.

the one thing that upset me was that the corrective surgery took an additional 12 or so inches from my large bowel. this played a part in having to rid of my large bowel before my j pouch surgery because there wasn't enough left for the surgeon to work with. at no point did anybody tell me that corrective surgery would risk not having enough large bowel left if i were to try to reconnect later.

i never had the staple procedure offered to me but i read about it as a newer procedure to control prolapsing. i wish i could i give you info about that because as with all surgeries and procedures, there's always a possibility of other issues that you didn't expect from having it done.

Good luck with whatever decision you make and hopefully she can get reconnected soon.

Thank you Torranceboy, unfortunately I highly doubt my daughter will ever have the option of being reconnected. She has severe Crohn's disease. They've already removed 5 inches of her small intestine due to inflammation so unfortunately being reconnected is just to risky since the disease will most likely just keep coming back.
My fear is that the surgeons will remove more bowel during this surgery and I really don't want that. She needs to keep as much of her small intestine as possible.

I had a temporary ikeo stormy in 2010 due to twisting in my sigmoid colon. During the rehab from the initial surgery, I had to go back into the hospital twice, one for a mall bowel obstruction and once for a case of pneumonia. While being treated for the pneumonia, I had prolapse issues with my temporary stoma. It's a very freaky experience to look into that bag and see your intestine sitting thre. Anyway, I had a quick procedure to redo the ikeo stormy and was back up and around, coughing up a storm, the next morning.

Right after me colectomy/ileostomy my stoma was prolapsed. It was always out about 3" and hung down. I always had an ulcer under my stoma. My surgeon said "I can fix it". He did and then it was recessed most of the time. I had many leaks. He fixed it again and it turned out the same....recessed. I found that a convex wafer eliminates the leaks. It is still recessed most of the time but not prolapsed.
