My husband is 2.5 wks post-op and has an ileostomy. I knew he would still have gas causing the bag to expand quite a bit, but I didn't realize it would also make farting noises. confused

Does anyone have any suggestions to avoid or minimize the fart noises? He's kind of nervous it would happen during a mtg at work.

My stoma was really noisy the first few months and then it quieted down considerably. A lot of people here have had that experience, and his will probably calm down a lot too. It still makes noises occasionally, but nothing like right after surgery.

There are products on the market to stifle the sound if it comes to that, and putting a hand over the bag can muffle it some. Mostly I just laugh though.... mine sounds more like I'm hungry than like I'm farting.

All that blue said is right on target.

With my recent issues of blockages galore and nothing coming out at night etc. I LONG for the days when my stoma just used to fart and put out and make all that noise when I was hungry. Those were the "good old days." He can be glad it is working. True during a meeting a bit embarrassing but what the heck. He can just put his hand over it or cough at the same time and try to cover over the noise. Or just say 'scuse me or my stomach is growling. I used to have some good one liners, but then I was not in meetings so i understand the concern. Good luck to him. Rosemary

He can take some gasx as a preventive, like 2 when he gets up, then 2 mid day or so. Making sure he eats before he gets hungry will help too. If I wait until I'm starving I have the worst noises! I sometimes put two little towel squares over my bag, that helps, or if I'm out I lay my hoodie or coat, if I have one, over my stomach. After a while he will be able to tell when its gonna do that. If he's at a meeting, suggest he either lay his suit jacket across his lap, or hold his briefcase or such on his lap.

This always bothered me during the nine months I had my ileo. I write for a newspaper so I'm constantly meeting with people I don't know. Never got to the point where I could laugh it off. I would often put my purse on my lap to muffle the noise. Eventually, he will probably be able to feel when air is getting ready to come out. Also, I drink a lot of Diet Coke and the carbonation will definitely cause gas. I learned not to drink any soft drinks until after my meetings and interviews. Certain foods and drinks cause gas so your husband might want to avoid those during work. Good luck!

My stoma was quite obnoxious post op. The worst is when it would awaken me at night! Being almost 2 years, the only issue is just like Summerstorm's. If I wait too long to eat, it is really loud! I muffle it with my hand or arm. Use things around me as a barrier. Acidic and carbonated things make my stoma loud, so understanding what to avoid when. It's difficult but doable!!!

It will settle down...about 5 weeks for me. Like it was mentioned, small meals/snacks several times a day will help.
