Hi,
Just needed to know if a hard red/purple raised skin area that itches could be an allergic reaction to a new product that the stoma nurse put on me after my revision. It is one I have not had before and her intent was to give me a gentle post op appliance that velcroed instead of clipped at the closure. BUT I got the above skin reaction in just one area. I have since gone back to another appliance and the area in question has improved quite a bit.
BUT the area of skin that was affected became very hard. It is away from the stoma so that part is good. I just wondered if anyone else had gotten this type of reaction to a product they were allergic to. Coloplast active life one piece tan was the thing that did in my skin. Hope the stoma continues to work and I get all these appliances sorted.
Monday I have to look for new appliances in the form of samples. Rosemary

Rosemary,
I have contact dermatitis as we speak, and it can look as you describe. Usually though, if it is a true allergy to the appliance, the mark will cover the area in all spots the appliance touched. Is it possible that a skin prep was used different that what you're used to?
Also, what is the brand you use that works? I am still trying to sort out my allergies and find a system I can deal with. This first-year learning curve is for the birds.

I had been going well with the stomahesive set up by convatec, but with the new stoma so swollen I have to go with one of those one piece jobs where the wafer looks like a target and you cut a BIG hole.
The one I was allergic to was a coloplast beige job, but I cannot remember the name. The good post op one is a clear one with a white wafer by convatec.
They used no sting barrier wipe Cavillon like I use at home, so no difference there. Glad to hear that what I have is likely just the contact dermatitis. What really concerned me was the hardness of the skin under the red/purple rash. I was praying it was not some issue that would screw up the stoma though that little area is way far from the stoma. Thankfully it is only in one little area and I thought like you that it would be under the whole area thankfully not.
We shall see tomorrow when VNA comes. I also have a painful area just to right of my navel that is a bit raised but that is where one of the laproscopic viewing ports went in (in the navel) so maybe it is that.
This Toradol is non-narcotic but plenty powerful. YIKES. I also have to find out what to do about the collapsed veins in my left arm. Sure hoping they uncollapse sometime in the near future. Too many IV's needed prior to finding help with the stoma revision, then all the IV's to do with that. Jeeze! No wonder they shut down.
