I know Ron has done this, but I'm curious if anyone else has just set off and driven across the country?
My son and I are going to do that, it won't be anytime in the next few years, but I wanted to go ahead and start thinking about some stuff because it will be a huge thing for us! My husband is horrible with car trips, he gets cranky and annoyed. So we decided that my son and I would just go alone! I'm thinking of just setting out and driving, sun roof open, radio blasting, singing as loud and badly as we can!
Has anyone ever done anything like that?

I drove cross country six times from Portland, OR to Boston and back when I was 19. It was interesting but I would not want to do it again. It was not at all relaxing. Sorry to be a downer. Maybe if you just targeted a few wonderful places to visit rather than the whole country?

Were you on a schedule, or just randomly driving around?

I sorta kinda did that - from Indiana to California. We stopped in St Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Phoenix, San Diego and then finally settled in Anaheim. It was AWESOME!

I drove to Alaska from ct. When I was 22. I think I would appreciate it now more, especially with my kid.

Wow! To Alaska? I'm not going that far,lol. I bet that was a long drive!
My son planned our trip out for me, we are going to stop at water parks, McDonald's, the mall, gas stations and an oil station. According to him we need to wait until he is old enough for a cell phone, so he can eat across the street if he wants to. I'm not sure what gives him the idea I would let him go eat across the street, cell phone or not!

If I get as well as I can I want to do a cross country drive. I think it would be fabulous. Rosemary

I've driven from Colorado to Florida and from Florida to New England. Both trips were around 2,000 miles each way. It was fun to roll down the windows, play music and sing loudly, and stop in little towns and big cities along the way. I went to AAA, had a TripTik made, and planned where I was going to stay along the trip, so I had a destination to shoot for each day. We live in a beautiful country, and it's fun to "see the USA in your Chevrolet!" You and Michael would have a blast! :-)

We were not on a schedule. I am just not into highways. I love mountains, snow, hiking, rivers, lakes, oceans and rock climbing deserts.

Lol Cece, can I go in a Lancer? Or maybe the lime green mustang "i think" I'm getting next (really I will be rolling by in my pinto!):)
Subvero I like to do those things too! But I also like to just see where a road goes. Sometimes if I have some extra time when I'm going somewhere, I will just turn onto a road and see where it goes! I don't like interstates though, and I'm going to try to plan most of our trip on regular roads.

Of course, you can be a "seat dancer in your Lancer" while touring the USA, but it would be really fun in a lime green convertible Mustang!!
