Back in hospital... Unexpected

Well what a strange turn of events... So i called doc about bein short of breath and some soreness in my belly and they suggested i go to the ER and have some chest xrays and ct scan of my belly and pelvis... Everything was prety normal except when they came back with the results and a wheelchair saying they had a room waiting for me in the ER and that i had a blood clot in my leg!!! So now im admitted and had a chest ct this morning to check my lungs. Im worried but we will see what they say. On blood thinners now waiting for next results! Keep me in your prayers!

You're going to be fine. It is a post-surgery possibility, I just wish they would tell you more about these kinds of possibilities and what to look out for.

With the coumadin, you have to eat the same amount of vitamin K every day. It's mostly found in leafy greens, and since it's so close to your original surgery, that will probably be none at the beginning. But as you get better, you might want to start eating greens..... My hospital had a coumadin clinic and I had a nurse there, so when I started eating greens I just got tested more often until they could up the dose to the right level. Then it was a bit weird to plan if say I was going out to a restaurant....would need to know if they had something w/greens that I'd want, or otherwise I'd eat greens earlier.... course, cool thing was that I could go to a restaurant and eat greens....

You also have to be careful if you happen to fall and hit your head.... even if it feels like no big deal, you're supposed to get an ambulance....

But the whole thing was not a huge deal...... glad it was not anything worse for you.

Happened to me, too.   Only mine did travel up into to both lungs.   I am surprised by the similar stories here of bloodclots being found while diagnosing other symptoms.   I developed post-surgical ileus and when they x-rayed my stomach area they happened to catch a portion of the bottom of my right lung and saw the clots.  Upon further testing, I had clots in both lungs and 3 clots in my left leg.  I had no symptoms of clots.   They talked about the possibility of having to do the filter thingy, but my leg clots were below my hips so I didn't need it.

Depending on who came into my room at the hospital, I was either very, very lucky to be alive, or never in any real danger, because the clots in my lungs were small, though numerous, but not in compromising areas???   Still feel lucky as I live in the country and depend on a volunteer emergency squad, so who knows for sure if I hadn't gone to the ER that night after a couple days of sickness and no appetite. 

Our hospital has a Coumadin Clinic, so I spent quite a bit of time there for the next 6-months.   And yeah, I lost hair.  They said it was NOT due to the Coumadin, but me thinks otherwise

Not saying that everyone who has commented so far has had UC, but one of the stranger tendencies is that UC people tend to be more prone to blood clots.

     db...did they give you heparin shots when you were hospitalized following your operation?  They gave me shots every eight hours for the entire 11 days I was in there even though I was up and walking the day after my operation.  They even gave me a shot of it last week when I was hospitalized for dehydration for only a day and a half.  This must be a very common problem.
