My son had a total colectomy on Aug 1 (agee 15). He now has a temporary ileostomy bag. Twice now, it looked like he had blood in his stool (noticed when he emptied his ostomy). Has anyone experienced this? He is 21 days post-op.

I had that happen to me right in the very beginning. It was only a small amount for a couple of days then it stopped. My surgeon said it was normal. For peace of mind, it wouldnt hurt to call his surgeon just to check.

That happens sometimes. Stomas bleed very easily, it can happen from that. Also, certain foods look like blood. For example, red velvet cake makes output look like you are bleeding to death!
Has he eaten anything with red, Orange or purple food coloring?

I hope that's all it is, Summer. The first time we saw what looked like blood... we thought it might be the grape jelly he ate (in his PB&J sandwich). The 2nd time we saw what looked like blood... I suppose it could have been the bbq sauce on the meatloaf he ate. Hopefully you are right.
