First of all, no question is a dumb question. My fourth grade teacher told me that a LONG time ago.
I know the perils of prednisone use. I have full blown osteoporosis and while on it suffered with uncontrollable high blood pressure (even taking three different blood pressure meds in the same day) and type 2 prednisone induced diabetes.
You won't have a movement with the end ileostomy. That is what I have and there is NO urgency, cramping or pain. I am referring to a bowel movement through the anus. Most of the time, I am not aware of it emptying into my bag.
Surgery is not a walk in the park and, depending on the individual, will take quite awhile to recover fully.
I was 63 yrs old at time of surgery, two years ago. I turned 66 on August 12th of this year. I had a few post surgical complications..ate too soon is one reason. I also have some vaginal spotting from time to time and I went through menopause over 20 yrs ago. My surgeon told me it was most likely from the operation. However, I was fully checked out in that department...PAP test, Transvaginal ultrasound..and everything is A-OK.
2. I was hospitalized 11 days because of the eating too soon and had to have the ng tube placed back down. On the 8th day...thought I was ready to go home and the nurse could not get a BP reading...temp was 105 and heartrate 150. Till this day, they do not know what went haywire. However, I was in a great hospital and had wonderful care. This is not the usual, so do not be alarmed.
3. I was one of those rare birds who actually LOST weight on prednisone. Sure, I had the moon face, but I only weighed about 112 lbs at time of operation and I am about 5'2". NOW I weigh 125!
So not sure about how to answer this question for you.
4. My daughters were both grown when I had the operation. I do have two grandkids. They know I have a "bag", but no need to go into detail with them. There are a lot of young moms in here who could better answer this.
5. I empty my bag about 4 times a day. If I happen to wake during the night to pee, I will empty, just for good measure. Sometimes I sleep all night and still no problem in morning. Just don't eat a huge meal after 6pm. I switched from Hollister bags to the Coloplast Sensura. I did have two Hollister bags break on me..lol. One was while we were at a Comedy Show at the Borgata Casino in AC..oy. thank GOD I ate a lot of wintergreen mints because that is what it smelled like...lololol. NOT fun though. I was able to clean myself up in the ladies room but what a MESS!!!
6. Regrets??? NONE!!! For me, it was a long recovery...would I do it all again? In a heartbeat! It gave me back my life!
Best of luck to you!!!
