Bleeding from anal incision

I ended up in the ER this morning because I started bleeding from my anal closure wound.  Since surgery 11 days ago I've spotted a little but this morning it was large drops.  After a 4 hour ER visit, it was determined that it was just some incision bleeding but it had stopped and the wound looked just fine.  They also said I was probably walking too much and to reduce my walking time until I see my surgeon later this week.

Gotta admit the bleeding freaked me out.  Has this happened to any of you who've had this procedure ?  Home Health Care nurse will check things out back there tomorrow to make sure all is OK.

     Am I the only one in here, whose surgeon did not sew the anus closed?  My rectum and colon are gone, but he left the anus intact.  Till this day (my operation was June of 2010) I still have some mucus drainage.    When I asked him, my surgeon told me he leaves it open because, in his opinion, there are more complications when sewn closed.  Some people in here have told me their surgeons sewed the anus closed to prevent cancer.   Maybe I shouldn't, but that thought always lurks in the back of my mind.

My surgeon said she does the closure because she considers leaving the anus open is just leaving an avenue for infection. There certainly seems that this is a preference issue with each surgeon having their own opinons on it. I left the decision entirley up to my surgeon and so far she has done very well by me.

Maybe the complications of sewing up the anus is in the recovery. Of everything that has happend with this surgery, the healing of the anal wound is definitely the most troublesome but I hear this is normal and should be much improved 3-4 weeks after surgery.

I'm almost a year out from surgery and my rear just closed a couple months ago - and I still have minor issues with it when I excercise (run for long periods). It is the hardest to heal b/c we sit on it all the time - do your best to roll to one side or the other and I used one of those perianal squirt bottles to "flush" the area until it didn't hurt to kind of pull my cheeks apart in the shower and let the water just run down. Sorry if that was TMI ;)

I'm glad your bleeding was not a big issue. Yes, I had my butt sewed up too but surprisingly i havent had any issues. I have gas and lower back pains which are driving me crazy but my butt doesn't hurt at all. Due to get the stitches out in a week.

For comfort, I do wear Tena diapers for women for extra cushion. You might want to try Depends or adult diapers, if you're not already.
