Hi everyone,

I am considering j-pouch surgery in the near future and was wondering if any of you j-pouchers out there got your surgery in New York City. Or, if you have recommendations for any surgeon in this area. I hear that it is critical to get the best surgeon to operate, so I want to make sure I meet with a few good ones before deciding on one. Thanks!!!

That is one of the most important things you can do...research and get a CR surgeon that is highly recommended. I am sure you will get some advice from people in your area here.

I did not have a j-pouch but opted for the permanent ileo. My first surgery was done in the top hospital in NJ, but unfortunately, I had issues from not going to the best hospital in the region (not really my fault though - I was very sick at the time). I ended up a Mt Sinai for a revision in May and went to an awesome surgeon, doctor Randolph Steinhagen. He is the chief of colorectal surgery over there. There are a couple of us who have had surgeries done by him, and some of us j-pouches. He is highly experienced in j-pouches.

As for me, he literally gave me my life back. the surgeon I had prior, who was not nearly as good, was arrogant and almost unapproachable. Dr. S. was the exact opposite. For someone as good as he is, it is amazing to me how kind and considerate he is toward his patients. Also, out of all of the hospitals to which I'd ever been, Mt Sinai is the best, hands down. It is clean, the nurses are great, and what I like best is that you are placed on the GI floor, with people going through the same sorts of stuff as you. I felt as though I got excellent care there.

Dr. Joel Bauer out of Mt. Sinai in Manhattan is supposed to be one of the best. I met with him and considered him quite seriously but then I ended up a bit closer to home and had my surgery done in Philadelphia by dr. Scott Goldstein out of Jefferson University Hospital. He did an awesome job!

My surgery consult is with Dr David Chessin no is a part of Manhattan Surgical Associates. I'll try to see if I can get to meet with Dr Bauer instead. I wonder if he will be willing to work on me given that I have consulted with his junior partner for other issues in the past. What do you think, Marianne?

I looked up Dr Steinhagen as well. He seems really good as well. I'll try to get a consult with him as well.

     I had surgery in Philly, total colectomy with end ileostomy because I don't trust these local hospitals here in south Jersey.

      I heard that Mt. Sinai is awesome in NY.  There was a guy in the UC forum by the name of Anthony, a young NYC fireman who had j-pouch and it was done in Mt. Sinai and he was very pleased.  Maybe you can research his past posts and contact him.

I believe that when they are part of a group like that they all work together and can see each others patients, however, who you chose will be the one operating on you. I know I have heard the entire group is excellent but Dr. Bauer is the one I always hear of. I liked him too. I would have had him do my surgery but I ended up in Philly with a surgeon I liked just as much and it was closer to home.
