I am about to have proctocolectomy with rectum removal surgery in 2 weeks. I already have an illiostomy for 19 yrs so I don't need that. My question is, has anyone with this surgery had to have tubes for drainage after the surgery? I can't find any articles about that. Thank you for any information you can help with.

I had two drains after my surgery last year. They were pretty uneventful for me and were removed within a few days of surgery. Luckily, I went home with no drains.

My husband had that surgery along with his permanent ileostomy. In his case he had no problems healing or problems with the drain tubes (was just happy to have them removed as it was uncomfortable for those 3-4 days while in place in the hospital). Afterwards things healed well. Hopefully it will be the same for you as well. Warm sitz baths help promote healing and protein is your friend and helps the body to heal faster also after surgery.
