If this general surgeon has done hundreds of colon/rectal type surgeries, including proctocolectomies with end ileos, and if you get a good trusting feelings about
this surgeon, than maybe it should be considered. However, I can't stress enough that a colon/rectal surgeon is the only way I would go. I was very lucky in that my surgeon, her office, and the hospital were only 30 minutes from my home but my second choice was the Mayo clinic which is 1 1/2 hours from my house and I would have gladly made the trips to get that level of care.
Yes 2 hours is a long drive but really, its not that long. And if you are worried about "accidents" during the long drive, well those with UC should have routines to deal with them. I always carried a kit with everything I needed to just clean up and get on with my day. It was never pleasant but it was better than limiting my life just because I might poop my pants once in a while and believe me.....I pooped my pants plenty.
Good Luck with whatever your choice may be and know that we are here to support you.
