What do jpoucher's do about expelling gas?

I have seen frequent discussion by ostomates discussing the art of burping the bag- ok, so I would assume the identical gas issue exists with a jpouch- so how is gas expelled? Isn't a fart basically extremely hazardous with a jpouch because one doesnt have the ability of a colon'd person to know in advance if it will be a fart or a shart? (If I am ignorant in that regard, olease correct me). Seriously, was curious about this.

And re. bag burping, I am curious how many have installed that proprietary unfiltered bag burping valve that at least one HW ostomy forum member has sworn by.

I have no issues passing gas with my j pouch. I will say though that I usually cannot be standing up. But sitting or laying down it's fine. Never had a leak or a "shart" with my j pouch. Maybe I am lucky? I asked my sister this same thing before my surgery (she has a long time j pouch) and she said she can pass gas too no problem.

marianne, you can't fart standing up? it doesn't work or something? or you'll shart...

Kind of hard to explain .....I have only passed gas standing a few times.....it's just not easy to do because you have to try too hard for lack of better words and I'm afraid if I did try hard, I would shart! Things are not the way they were down there anymore. ;) I'm sure there are other j pouchers out there that can do it but from what I have read, most don't try it standing up.

I also have no problem passing gas while sitting or laying down. It's not too often that it occurs while standing up. Oh, and I love it; for me it's odorless and silent!

When I asked my surgeon about passing gas (or people not being able to) he looked at me like I was crazy. From what I've seen on forums, most people can but some need to be laying down or sitting down.

No longer have an ostomy and not a J poucher but I hope you don't mind my chiming in here.

When I've experienced severe gas back up and trying to release it, I find that gravity helps the most. I just walk up and down stairs, several times.

I also massage my stomach, following the track of the colon. In your case you'd have to figure out the path to follow with the palm of your hand, you apply gentle pressure and can sometimes push gas along this way or dislodge it from pockets along the GI tract (again probably not your case). A nurse gave me this massage tactic to try and I've used it on occasion, going back to nearly 14 years now.

J-poucher here, and yes, I still shart.. a year after surgery. :(
So I only try to pass gas on the toilet..I also don't always know I am "going" when I am on the potty until I wipe...
Odd, I know, but not a lot of sensation "back there".. SUrgeon said he would have to fix "tear"? Down there at some point, but as it was not causing any holding issues, he wasn't in a hurry to do it. (Good thing because he is gone for another 6 months to Afghanistan, and I am NOT real partial to traveling over there right now...lol)
But, no, I do not even attempt to pass gas unless I am seated on the throne :)
WHen I get gas build up, I drink LOTS of hot liquids and take a hot bath..that helps. And I don't drink carbonated stuff either...that makes a big difference.
