I'm a 22 y/o male and I was told that I need to have a surgery for my full rectal prolapse. The general surgeon told me that the best option for me is to have it done through the anus because unfortunately, the second method which is done through the abdomen has the risk of causing Erectile dysfunction. The surgery through the anus carries smaller risk of complications but the downside is that this procedure carries a higher risk of rectal prolapse recurrence.
The surgery I was recommended was either Delorme operation or Perineal Protectomy. I can't remember which one.
But I'm not sure if either Delorme operation/Perineal Protectomy is really effective enough to repair my full rectal prolapse. I really want to make sure that my prolapse never comes back again. I also make sure that the constipation, tenesmus and mucous discharge that's caused by rectal prolapse will also be gone for sure because it's severely affecting my life.
Wikipedia says that there's only 1 - 2% risk of impotence in males with abdominal procedure. That sounds like pretty low risk to me.
Is Delorme operation/Perineal Protectomy really the only suitable option that I can go through?
I heard of a new safer abdominal procedure method called the laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) and it's supposed to have less risk of damaging the nerves. Here's the article I read about
it: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1207203/Me-operation-Doctors-said-I-IBS--fact-Id-suffered-prolapse.html
Should I discuss about
having this procedure with the general surgeon?
