I just got some samples of convatec convex moldable wafers. In the directions it makes no mention of using barrier rings. My stoma isn't that short but sometimes it retracts to below flush with my skin for a few seconds. Anyone in the same situation and use moldables. What do you do? I was told they swell up and fill the area in really nicely but I don't know if it would be enough to prevent a leak.

From what I understand the rings should not be needed. My husband tried those for awhile and liked them...he developed a sensitivity to the outer adhesive as he did with the Hollister brand. He then went and tried the Coloplast Sensura which has been the one for him.

Might you need a convex wafer?

No, it doesn't make mention of barrier rings. I had to verify with convatec's nurse.

I use both...Eakin and convatec convex moldable wafers. Also dab paste on either end due to dips.

So I dab the dips with paste, place the Eakin and then wafer. I firmly press the moldable area for about 1-2 minutes. It spreads and fills in. Takes all the guesswork out. Then I place the pouch.

I use a Convatec convex moldable with a full Eakin seal, placing the Eakin snuggly around the stoma and then the wafer on top.   I am also diligent with my "heat & pressure" routine to get them set and melded together.

I do believe the idea behind the moldable was that it does not need a barrier ring, but I don't think the moldable alone would work for me even though my stoma sticks out far enough.    Maybe it is just a security thing, but the way I see it is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"  :-)

I ended up using it without the rings. I could see my stoma above the turtle necking but somehow I managed to get a leak. It may have been from bending down or it retracting. Not sure if I should try it with a ring.

I used them for many years, with an Eakin Seal, without problems. BUT...after one of my surgeries my stoma changed and on occasion it does become shorter (not flush w/skin but close) and leaks. the convexity in the moldables just isn't enough sad
