I agree with ActiveUCer about
the big questions! I'd also clarify the procedure you're undergoing exactly -- what is being removed? The colon AND rectum or just the colon? Will this be a permanent ileostomy or is the rectum being left intact in anticipation of a possible future reconnection? Will you have a loop or an end ileostomy? Is there anything that the surgeon might encounter during the procedure that would cause him to change the plan during the operation?
A big part of the stoma nurse's job is education so don't be afraid to ask her a load of questions when you meet... in many ways they are more knowledgable about
ostomies because they see patients for tons of follow up and the "everyday" issues where surgeons really only know about
the ways that things can go seriously badly.
