Complications..... UC in the bladder??????

is it even possible??

The blood is still in my urine and I woke up this morning (on discharge day) unable to pee.  The blood clots just block the urine form coming out.

So....  off to urology I went 3pm, med free - the did a cystoscopy (camera into my bladder), they filled me with dye, checked my uretal tubes and bladder for any leakage.  All was not leaking - but I have a large area of severe ulceration and inflammation.  They proceeded to cauterize my bleeding as I screamed and told them they had to stop. 

Now I'm in my room with a bladder irrigation system hooked up for the night.  Might not be able to leave until Monday.  I'm rather angry, as I've complained to every nurse and doctor this week about my pain and my bloody urine.  There's been little concern and no investigation until today - 4 days after removal of my catheter.

The urologist wasn't sure why it was there - no problems pre-surgery.  He thought either irritation from the catheter for surgery or my UC had travelled into the bladder,

All this aside, Peg performs like a champ and gurgles all night... seems soda is not good for me now, though...

Sorry to hear this. I don't know about the bleeding but it is very normal to have difficulty urinating after any kind of abdominal or pelvic surgery. It took about a month for my urination to go back to normal after my colectomy. I couldn't pee unless I *really* needed to, and my bladder wouldn't empty completely. I'd pee until it stopped, then have to sit there and force myself to pee more, and about double would come out. Anyway, the short story is that it's easy for the nerves in the area to get "stunned" and they can take some time to return to normal.

NOT to scare you, but there is a woman on j-pouch.org who ended up needing to self-catheterize for a few months after surgery. Then one day she woke up and could pee on her own again. So, it can happen, but it can also just fix itself with time. From what I've read, over time self-cathing really becomes no big deal.

I had a REALLY hard time peeing after surgery.  It was pretty much the worst thing that I delt with once they took out the catheter.  For the first 12 hours I did okay.  Initially I needed water running, etc.  During the first night after catheter removal I woke up completely full and couldn't go for quite some time in the middle of the night.  By the next day I was having a lot of leakage to what they attributed a full bladder and being on pain meds before realizing.  By the next night I couldn't go on my own again at all.  They had to come in and catheterize me again because I was in so much pain.  It was not fun at all.  I was afraid to go back to sleep because the nurse was nasty about it and said she wouldn't catheterize me again -- I needed to "learn" to go on my own.  I knew if I got too full it would be hell once again. 

The next day was discharge day for me, and believe it or not, the doctor prescribed Flomax, and it worked.  I couldn't believe it.  He sent me home with a few days worth, and I got right back on track.  Of course, I set my alarm for every two hours the first night home because I was afraid I'd have a problem at home. 

When I had surgery six months later I had the same problem initially, and told my new surgeon about the Flomax.  Once again, it worked.

I too had blood in urine and pain in that area post op.  I was told it was totally normal since I had been catheterized for almost 48 hours.

Thanks for the inputs. I'm still hooked up to this irrigation machine and the cauterizing of my bladder ulcers must have worked as the output is perfect!

Staying away from the carbonation and last night I tried to eat my cookie that came with dinner - not good....

Peg is happy and working great :)

You must of had major irritation from the catheter. I had troubles to with urinating from that darn cath after surgery too. And aside from the catheter being in, the anesthesia from the surgery does a number on your bladder as well. For some people like us it takes a while for it all to go back to normal. You should be all fixed up in no time. :)

Sorry for the complication :(. I had one too (ileius) but it was 5 days after release so it sucked to go back in... At least you are still there, much as that sucks- better than ending up in emergency like I did. Just wanted to let you know that it was not easy for me to pee for a while either, post catheter- it was very weak and forced, with my bladder not fully emptying for a while. The narcotic pain meds do a number on those muscles. Initially I had to stand up or at least ait on side of my bed, in total privacy, and take my time to get a dribble, and then could often start a bit of flow. Hoping it was just catheter irritation. I have never heard of IBD affecting the bladder.

My problem was a lot different from everyone else's - my urine was red with blood. When I did get it to start - it was blood clots & then urine. The camera they put into my bladder (I got to see the TV screen) showed a huge area of bleeding - the entire area between both of the urethra tubes. The clots were coming from that patch of inflammation and ulceration. The urologist cauterized it with a tool much like solder gun (electric heat) - it was the worst pain I've ever felt. Any how - now I pee without blood or issue. I have to return in 3 months for another scope of my bladder to see how things look.

I am finally home - a tad worried about infection starting in my anal closure, though....

All I want to know is why you had inflammation and ulceration in your bladder. Did they tell you specifically why? And don't let them tell you UC in the bladder or some nonsense like that.

The urologist is not sure... he didn't do a biopsy because he was worried it could make things worse. I go back in three months for another bladder scope to see if it is healed up & if not, he'll then take a biopsy and cauterize under anesthesia.

His only ideas were my UC or due to the catheter I had for surgery. The area of problem was at the top of my bladder between the inlets for the ureters that come from the kidneys. I was fully awake for the entire scope and was able to watch & talk with the Dr.
