I'm almost 4 weeks from my bowel re-segment surgery and my new stoma while my colon heals. I've been passing more and more from my rectum over the last week and seeing some blood. My surgeon sent me for a cat scan on Friday and it showed that my rectum is inflamed. I haven't heard back from my doc yet as I got the scan very late in the day. Has anyone else experienced this? What is normally done to treat rectal inflammation?

The treatment for rectal inflammation in the case of Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis, is from a variety of suppositories and foam enemas, some steroid based, some not. I don't know if that would be the same in your case, but wouldn't be surprised if that's the treatment offered.

Thank you, I figured it might be something along those lines. I'll have to see what he gives me. The throbbing down there is getting bothersome.

Externally you can use an excellent OTC ointment, calmoseptine. It's great when you have burning, itching and extreme discomfort.

thankfully I haven't had any burning and itching yet. When I do go I still have that strong pressure that I want to get out more that's not there. I can feel my colon emptying and it causes a bit of abdominal discomfort and rectal throbbing that will last for about half an hour or so

     Just a question as I haven't read all your posts, but, why didn't you have a total colectomy with end ileostomy?

The surgeon re-diagnosed me with Crohn's Colitis prior to surgery and that was my discharge diagnosis as well. I believe they are analyzing the removed piece to hopefully determine further.

Yeah, I had severe rectal inflammation after my sub-total colectomy. I tried Canasa and butyrate suppositories. Because it was close to my next surgery to remove the rectum all together the surgeon requested that I not use rectal steroids, but that would have been the next step.

The other option would be to switch to a maintenance med that works systemically, like 6MP or Remicade, instead of a topical like Pentasa. That would treat potential inflammation in the small bowel as well as the rectum, even though it isn't hooked up.

I was on Remicade and 6MP prior to surgery. They said no Remicade for at least a month following surgery. I'm a little skittish about taking an immune supressant like 6MP while I'm still healing. Guess I'm afraid of developing something that my body won't be able to fight

well I'm back in the hospital since Monday. Among other issues my rectum is acting up more and should have some results and direction today. They took a sample of what's coming from my rectum and sent it to a lab outside of the hospital. My colon has become a bit crampy and passing a lot of thickish beige liquid mixed with blood. Also tho I'm seeing pieces of solid stuff coming out too that I'm not sure what it is. To me it looked like stool which shouldn't be happening.
