I just did a bag change tonight and I noticed something I have never seen happen. I started to notice a very watery milky discharge running down my body. When I wiped it up, it looks exactly like mucous BUT, it's not coming from where the hole is that my stool comes out from, it's like there's another opening below it and it just up and spits out a lot. It was hell trying to do a bag change in between this stuff coming out. I don't know if this is something to worry about. There was a very slight stinging, throbbing sensation when it comes out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ok now I feel stupid. I couldn't get a hold of my surgeon so I called my GI's answering service. The doctor on call called me back. I was not aware that with my diverting ileostomy that there are two physical holes. The top hole being the proximal and the bottom being the distal. The distal opening is where all the mucous came from. I have never seen any of this before so when I see it pouring out of a hole that I was not aware of I was a little freaked. He said as long as I'm not showing fevers, the discharge isn't like pus and there's no weird smell it should be ok. He's going to call my surgeon in the morning to let him know I called about this. I'm due for a sigmoidoscopy monday with my surgeon so I'll follow up with him then.

Don't feel stupid you won't be the first or the last to ask this question I would of freaked if it had happened to me! Glad you managed to find out what it was and it was nothing serious to worry about x

Trying to do a bag change with an active stoma is bad enough but when this bottom hole is squirting out liquid every 10 seconds it makes it dam near impossible...especially when you're trying to press your flange down on your body. All that did was make it erupt more! My stoma seemed to be very very active during this discharge, it was sticking out much further than normal and I could constantly feel it moving. It almost looked as if it may have been slightly swollen. Just in case there may have been some sort of partial blockage I followed some of the rules and used a heating pad on my abdomen, drank some cola and then a couple cups of tea. I was more than happy to see some output in my bag this morning, about 150cc.

I call the Dr.'s office with anything that seems off. I'm will call the on-call surgeon with no hesitation if something is weird. Better safe than sorry. I would have called in too if I had something similar.

I tried to call the surgeons office and there was no answering service. I need to double check that tomorrow when I get my sigmoidoscopy. My GI's office was next in line for me to call but it was another doctor who was on duty for the weekend. I know my GI's office knows my surgeon well so if there was an issue the GI felt was off I knew they could get a hold of my surgeon.
