Camping in the mountains - do I need to regulate the temp for my supplies?

Hi all,

I am going to be staying in a cabin without heat/air in the Rocky Mountains for about a week and a half - leaving in a few days. Sometimes it can get to 95 degrees during the day and I have been there when it has reached 40 degrees at night during this time of year. Do I need to be worried about the supplies I am bringing with me becoming less adhesives due to the extremes in temperature? Any suggestions? The cabin does have an outlet. I use a Hollister 2 piece bag (convex wafer) with Adapt barrier ring. Thanks in advance. :)

All your supplies most likely moved by semi truck across the country. They were in the trailer for days. I'm a long haul truck driver and it gets pretty hot in those trailers. And cold. It's more likely the conditions would be more moderate after you had possession of them. I would think you will be alright.

That's a good point! I hadn't thought about the fact that they were carried across country in trucks. I had thought about bringing a travel fridge but was afraid that might be too cold. I just figured someone out there had camped and experienced it before. I am going to bring lots of extra supplies in case of decreased adhesiveness due to sweating. Don't want my family to miss out on these adventures just because I have an ostomy now.

I didn't try bring the can of Medical Adhesive in the carry on so I put it in the checked bag. It made it through. Walmart carries it as well as other brands of medical adhesive. Any would probably work. Walmart was the back up plan if the airline removed as it went through security.

I use small binder clips when hiking. Clip it down on the end over the Velcro. Light weight. Don't even know they are there. I use them at night. Walmart has them, a box of 12 for .89.

As long as they are not sitting in the Sun for any amount of time. As far as cold......not sure how to deal with that one.

I do a lot of camping, backpacking and climbing-- often in the remote wilderness where one would never carry a cooler. I have even hiked in 98 degree temps and never had a problem with heat hurting my supplies. I just try to put my backpack in the shade when I am not carrying it. I have also been on long road trips where there was no choice but to leave my supplies in a hot car when it was parked places (my cooler was full of food with no room for ostomy stuff.) Again-- no problems as long as I didn't leave the supplies in direct sunlight. The only issue I have ever had is that my Eakin Rings have melted and flattened in their package after being in a hot car. In those cases, I just roll the Eakin into a snake shape and then reshape it into a ring when I put it around my stoma.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, I have also camped in sub-freezing temps. The only adjustment I have had to make in these situations is to warm up my supplies on my belly before doing a change as the wafers and Eakins become a bit stiff and rigid in the cold.

I use Convatec Durahesive wafers and have also used Coloplast X-pro and standard-wear on some of these trips. I can't speak to how well Hollister holds up to heat, but I doubt they would be much different.

Anyway, it seems like living a life where one never had their supplies exposed to hot or freezing environments would be totally unrealistic. UPS leaves my supply package on my doorstep on the hottest and coldest of days and nothing negative happens to my supplies. Sometimes I wonder why the companies put that on the package. It seems like it could worry those with ostomies needlessly and may hold us back from traveling or trying sports.
