Ileoanal anastomosis (IPAA) is a j pouch and the rectum is removed. Ileorectal anastomsis (IRA) that the OP is asking about
is where they hook up the small intestine directly to the rectum. (so the rectum stays) Two different procedures. They do this procedure on CD patients who may be candidates for it.
I have a j pouch due to UC so I can't really give much advice. I can only say I have read enough on these forums to know that many have had this procedure and have done well with it. Hopefully someone will come along who had it done. I will tell you though that I have done great with my j pouch. Never had a leak or an accident. Your chances would be better I would think because you will still have your rectum. Good luck!
