Remember my epidural debate???

Wow, were you in a lot of pain then? I'm sorry you went through this. I hope that at least the surgery went well, how are you feeling now?

The epidural isn't supposed to fully numb your abdomen -- it sounds like it probably did provide some pain relief in that area, but it also made your leg numb (and that stinks). I'm sorry you had a bad experience -- it's not the most likely outcome but it does happen to some people.

I had an epidural for my perm. ileostomy surgery and had a similar experience with resulting numbness in one leg. The needle actually dislodged about 4 hours after surgery and I ended up with a pain pump.

Because of the numbness in my leg, I was not able to walk the first 2 days following surgery. Subsequently, I developed a DVT that led to a massive PE. Although I think epidurals for pain management work well for some, and at times even better than PCA's, I don't think I would opt for it again. Hopefully I won't have a future occasion to have to consider it!

The pain wasn't that bad actually. The most pain I feel is from my hernia repair. It still a little ouchie......but then it's only been a week.

How are you feeling now? Better?

Oh yes, much, much better. Hoping to be home from the hospital by Friday. The only thing keeping me is the TPN. The dieticians are keeping track of my calorie intake on a full fluid diet because I am refusing the hospital's "ileostomy diet" which last time included not well cooked carrots... no wonder I got a blockage. I'm waiting to go home to start eating solid foods because I will be able to cook them as soft as I want.

Annadee, do take it easy when you get home. I am eating a good amount now but in very small amounts several times a day.

Thanks, no. The nurses were actually being careful and I had one supporting each arm and I guess they stopped me hitting the floor. Was an odd feeling though as I'd walked a few yards already with the epidural in, so I wasn't expecting a problem that time. No harm done.
