Keeping (ur)anus ?

So, during surgery, I will have a colostomy done at about the level of the sigmoid colon. They will remove my rectum, it's severely prolapsed. Wondering what happens when they just leave the anus? Does it make mucus? Are there any problems with keeping that in and the other stuff taken out?

Surgeon said that because I'm also having a hysterectomy (with all "lady parts" removed), and a bladder sling done during the surgery for the colostomy, removing the anus and sewing me up would be too much to have done at once. Said that if, in the future, I had any issues, they could do another surgery to remove the anus and do the "barbie butt" thingy.

Any thoughts…..

I had my surgery in 2010. I suffered with ulcerative proctitis for twelve years prior to my operation, ran the gamut of meds and had become prednisone dependent. My surgeon took the rectum and colon out but left the anus. I never had issues until this past summer when the UC came back into the anus. I am seeing a new colorectal surgeon because the surgeon who operated on me has retired. This new guy did biopsies, but all is well. He did suggest keeping the anus but having biopsies at least every two years. I was using Canasa suppositories, but they seemed to irritate me. The mucus is coming out my vagina! Moreso now than after my operation. I think the UC has subsided. The surgeon said my use of Ibupropen contributed to the UC returning. I was taking Ibupropen for back pain, but he prescribed Tramadol. I see him again on Jan 28th...so...keeping my fingers crossed all is well. I too was too ill for them to take the anus at the time of my operation. I was also almost 64 yrs old. I am now 68.

You have no idea how much this means to me. I'm having a pretty tough time. Surgery is scheduled for Jan. 27th. Thank you so much for your kind words Dixie! They mean more than you will ever know. I actually have a post-it on my fridge with a quote from you telling me it's gonna be ok and to hug the hell outta my bear. I see those words every day and it reminds me I have support and I feel the love and hugs with it. I'm still hanging in there, but most days, seems like just barely.
