Anyone have any suggestions for muffling the noises from gas? I have to sit in meetings and I cannot control the outbursts. my first week back to work and trying to figure out ways to keep this from happening.

How long ago was your surgery? For about six weeks following surgery, my stoma was really, really noisy.....now, I hardly hear her.

Hopefully it will settle for you. Everyone I work with knows about my stoma anyhow so even if she did make noise they would likely just ignore it.

Do you notice a difference when you eat different foods?

Mine made a lot of noise after surgery too (you could hear it in the next room), and then it quieted, now just a little bit now and then. Sometimes just putting your hand over your stoma helps. Have you tried simethecone (GasX)?

There are several products you can wear to muffle noise. Here's one: http://www.stomastifler.com/index.php

I haven't used them so can't comment on how effective they are.

Depending on your situation, you can also just laugh or tell people a bit about your situation (can be vague... )

Surgery was in late March but have had gas and bloating on occasions. Dr. told me to try probiotics. I have a stoma guard hoping that would muffle it some but it doesn't. I keep a jacket with me since I work in an office and I lay that on my lap during meetings. that helps some but it is still noticeable when it happens. I have read about some products that use foam to muffle the sound and might give that a try. These belts and guards are so darn expensive though.

Maybe you could try just getting a piece of foam and making something yourself, at least just to see if it works, before investing money.... maybe you could slip over the wafer in a meeting?

You are still fairly soon after surgery so might still get better.

Do you have a colostomy or an ileostomy? I wouldn't think probiotics would help much with an ileo, since most of the bacteria live in the colon.... have you tried the gas X? That helped me a lot after my recent surgery.

Are you eating frequent small meals/snacks? You may find eating a peanut butter cracker or pretzels before a meeting will keep the noise down.

when you feel it coming or it starts, press your hand over it. muffles the noise, no damage, and is free and uncomplicated.
