rectum removal and resection

I've had a colostomy for the better part of a year as the result of a perforated colon, and I've recently found out that I need my rectum completely removed (it is diseased and has to go). My surgeon can reverse the ostomy after the rectum removal heals.

I've felt like the ostomy has taken a piece of my life and confidence so I've looked forward to a reversal, but I feel like I've read nothing but horror stories about reversal after a rectum removal. I am a pretty active guy and like to go to the gym most days of the week, but I fear the worst now. Are there any good outcomes out there?!?

There definitely are good outcomes! The procedure is a standard J-pouch. I am on the same boat, ostomy with rectum, waiting for the 2nd surgery. My rectum hasn't been giving me a ton of trouble. I am surprised because it was always angry before the surgery. I guess with nothing going through it, it can't be THAT bad... we have members here with good outcomes and there are loads of members who have come and gone who are out living life with their j-pouches. I think there are more bad stories than good because the good ones come and go, the bad ones stick around trying to figure out what to do.

I thought i was going to be really insecure with the ostomy bag but I haven't really let it get to me.

I've had a very successful outcome with my j pouch. (If that's what you're having done....if your rectum is being removed then I assume so). The vast majority of people do just fine. An important key to success is a really good surgeon. Good luck!
