Another question. Sweating and exercise.

Before I had my ileostomy I was pretty active. I was on week 15 of an 18 week marathon training program running over 50 miles a week. I am not going to lie. Running is one of the only things that keeps me sane. I ran a 5k a little over two weeks post op. Of course I had a seal failure on the way home. "what is that smell"? It was funny in its own little way.

I sweat. When I say I sweat I mean I SWEAT. After a 10 mile run my shirt will be 100% soaked, after 15 miles the sweat has run down my legs and started to fill my shoes. Not unheard of for me to lose 10 pounds in water weight alone during the summer months on a long run.

I think the belt contributed to the failure because it is not breathable and retained water which contributed the wetness. I ordered some sure seal rings and will be using them next time.

I also love to sit in the hot tub and use some zinc waterproof tape to help. The tape fails after about 45 minutes which is not bad but would love to sit n the tub a little longer.

I was thinking about getting a mesh maternity belt that breaths? Are there any other options out there for people that sweat or like to sit in the hot tub?

Sure Seals www.alpglobal.com They are breathable and waterproof. They hold up in hot tubs, too.

I run Half Marathons plus weight train and do hot yoga...so I SWEAT every day...and they haven't failed me yet. I use Coloplast Extended Wear with an Eakin Seal and I do not use any belts/support items.

Granted, I do not always get more than 5 days of wear time per appliance, but that's ok with me. I do find during the summer months when I am swimming and doing all those fun boating/paddling sports it can vary, too.

You can request samples from ALP Global. There is a learning curve so give it a couple tries. I actually just ordered my next batch online, from one of the cheaper places that doesn't take insurance, and 50 seals cost me a little under $60 with shipping. I think places like Edgepark charge $15 to $20 per pack of 10.

just a thought: do you use Skin Prep or Soap when you change your appliance?

If so, that could be part of the problem...
